How do you react?
Sometimes I say "thanks" but it feels awkward...the same as if someone gave me a compliment. Am I just weird?

I say thanks but think nothing of it. I think it's just the polite thing to say. No one would ever say, "your baby is ugly!" LOL

I awkwardly say 'thanks'. I'm just generally pretty awkward around strangers though. I prefer no interaction when I'm out in public. Wave to my cutie if you must, but pleeeease don't talk to me.

@plantains: @swurlygurl: Yup! Worse is when they say "isn't she just the cutest baby?" and stare at you and youre like "I guess".

I work from home so I HOPE people will talk to me and ask about E... I LOVEEE human interaction! But this one is hard! I just say thanks! Or sometimes "aww thanks we think so too!" if they go on.
My mom adopted me and went from struggling/sadness to having a baby in a matter of days. She said she was so excited that when people would comment on how cute/pretty I was she'd say "I KNOW!! Isn't she!!!!!" very genuinely hahaha

I just say thank you. I figure I'm just thanking them for the compliment on LOs behalf since she can't talk.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
I usually say thank you or tell LO to say thank you (She's only 9 months but whatever) or if they were being extra friendly or chatty I'll say something like "Thanks! I grew her myself
" lol but that's just me
grapefruit / 4823 posts
I usually say thanks and have an awkward smile/giggle because I never know what to say!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
I say Thanks! I feel weird not saying anything. Plus we made her, so I can take some of that credit.

@Mrs. Sunshine: this
I always tell her to say thank you even though she can't really say it. Or I awkward giggle and say thank you.
pear / 1812 posts
I usually say something along the lines of @LuLu Mom: "Thanks! I definitely think so!"
papaya / 10570 posts
I usually beam and say thank you, probably engaging in some kind of small talk as well..... but I feel awkward deep down because, well, I don't her growing up thinking "pretty" is the ultimate compliment. I want people to comment on how clever she is or how kind she is so she values those characteristics above all others.....

People stare at my daughter. Strangers have come up to us to tell us how cute/pretty she is. It's weird and awkward but I always say thank you. What's MORE awkward is when they keep going on about it. And then I'm all, "mumbling strange noises..."

I am proud of it! I always say thank you sincerely.
But honestly, DD is *stunning* so we get stopped a lot. Not sure how that happened - DH and I are both attractive, but spectacularly so.

i say, "Paige so and so said you're pretty, what do you say?" and she will respond "thank you".
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
I love it- I always say thank you!
she gets complimented constantly - I'm afraid once she understands, she will get a big head
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
I always say thanks and if their kid is around will say "so and so is so cute too!" Some woman at the grocery store went on and on about how he has the best eye brows. Now I thought that was strange and didn't know what to say.

I always ask him to say thanks!
I do find it awkward though. I always feel like I should compliment back... "uh... I like all your cats". haha.
pomegranate / 3791 posts
I just smile and say thank you. I've never really felt awkward about it though, maybe I just have a big head but he is pretty much the cutest thing ever! Haha

This reminds me of a post from the Honest Toddler: "Why do my parents say 'thank you' when strangers compliment MY good looks? So desperate for attention. Sad."
papaya / 10343 posts
Lol I say "I know! She is adorable!"
Doesn't feel awkward to me.. They aren't complimenting me. And she IS gorgeous so I might as well agree.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
I ususally smile and say thank you - "we think so too!" and laugh it off.
@hummusgirl: lol. the babies got the genes from us
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Haha, we all know its small talk, so I just smile and nod I agreement.
Even the unfortunate looking babies get called cute, because who would call a baby ugly? That's just heartless.
grapefruit / 4819 posts
I usually smile and say 'thank you, we think so too' or 'yes, she's a keeper for sure!' Something along those lines.... It would be weird to say anything else so a simple thank you feels perfectly normal and acceptable to me.
And of course, I do think I have two of the most beautiful babies in the world so naturally people would compliment me on them!
pear / 1650 posts
@wonderstruck: lol me too! I must have a huge mama head cause I eat up the compliments lmao
pear / 1657 posts
Since my baby is only 4 days old , I can't get enough of it honestly! I'm sure I that as he gets older I'd rather people notice that he is kind, smart, helpful or hardworking, but right now I'm pretty glad that people say he's beautiful.
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
@mediagirl: YES! It's pretty easy to say thanks or "I think so too", but what do you do when they go on and on? It feels weird to say thanks again and also weird not to.
@aegie: Is your LO Paige? So is mine!
grapefruit / 4997 posts
I always smile and say thank you. They don't stay cute forever so I will enjoy this while it lasts. LOL
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
I say thank you! It's awkward when someone says "your dog is so cute!!!!!!" I never know how to react to that.
pomegranate / 3231 posts
I say thank you, but my son is three months old so I delivered him relatively recently!
pomegranate / 3580 posts
I was wondering about how others respond just the other day. I always say "thank you".
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
I say thanks? Lol.
Now, I never know what to do when people say TO my daughter "you're so cute!" Or "I love your shoes!" ...
