My LO has had a fever all day. It's been up and down. He has no other symptoms to go along with it. He just has really high temperatures. It went up to as high as 104 today. We have just been giving him Tylenol and that would bring it down but a couple hours later it will be back up again. He has not been himself all day. He's lethargic and does not want to play. He's still been drinking water and ate just applesauce and soup. I'm just worried for tonight. How high of a temp do you take a 16 month old to the ER?

i would call the pediatrician on call and see what they say. lethargic and not eating sounds like symptoms of something to me. hope LO feels better soon! 104 is high!

My kids spike very high temps when they are young, like your LO's age and up to 2 yo. We've seen 104+ and I know the feeling ...it's very scary. Usually Motrin does the trick better for us, but we do rotate with Tylenol too, if needed. We also use cool washcloths to to try to make them more comfortable when they are really "burning up".
I have taken my youngest to the ER and Urgent Care twice though for low diaper count/dehydration, which they are at higher risk for during febrile episodes.
I would absolutely call your on-call pediatrician if you see continued lethargy, any signs of dehydration, a fever you can't seem to control, or even just for peace of mind. Good luck and hope LO gets back to normal soon!

Agreed.... I would call our pediatrician before headed to the ER...
My LO was like that two weeks ago and it ended up being the start of RSV. I took him to the ER after two days of high fever and breathing issues. -
Its usually good if the fever comes down with tylenol and motrin. We ended up heading to the ER when her breathing became really rapid.

Our doctor said that as long as the temp kept coming down with meds and wasn't consistently high (and she was eating/drinking and not getting dehydrated) then we didn't have to come in. If we have an issue in the middle of the night we call the number on the back of our insurance card, there's a 24/7 nurse to answer our questions.

Our pediatrician's advice is to head to the ER (if after office hours) when the fever is over 103 and isn't helped by Tylenol or Motrin. My LO responds better to Motrin when she has fevers.
