I am pregnant with #2 and will be returning back to work after maternity leave. I am wondering when to register/get on the list for daycare? With #1 I stayed home with him for a year so it wasn’t an issue. I have heard to get on lists early but I am not sure how soon is too soon.

In my city, before you get pregnant! I find that this is very dependant on the area you live in. My second isn't due until the middle of September, but we have to start paying for daycare September 1 to guarantee a spot come December.

Depends; better start calling and asking! I know some of the "top"/popular ones def have a waitlist. But the one we ended up with, I actually toured it at the very very end and got in fine no issues and we love it there.

I toured our daycare the day I delivered, ignored the issue for 2 months and finally registered 1 month before E started but we are in the suburbs with plenty of centers. I started emailing places the month or so before E was born asking for prices and availability.

It's not too soon to get on a list. With LO1 I picked a place about 7 months before I needed it (at 6 months pregnant). They didn't even have any babies in their infant room and I was the only one on the list. By the time she started going at 4 months the infant room was full with a serious waiting list.
By the time I got pregnant with #2 we had moved and we're using an in home daycare. DCP was the first or second person I told I was pregnant - way before my parents.

At our daycare priority is given to siblings but there is still a waitlist! I called the infant side when I was about 5 months along, that was plenty of time to get in there for our start date (when LO was 3 months old).

Alright I better call this week then. Thanks everyone! We will send this baby to the same daycare my LO went to but he is in school now so we may not get any sort of priority since he no longer attends there

The waitlist we added DS to is 3-4 years. It's insane.

Our daycare knew I was pregnant with number 2 before my parents did. They were literally the 2nd or 3rd person I told.

Do it now! I started looking 6 months before I needed care and I just barely found a place for my son. Luckily we're super happy with the place we ended up at, but we were definitely lucky. Next time around I'm getting on the list right when I find out I'm pregnant.

It totally depends on your area, and also on the daycare policies. In my area, there are few center slots for infants and most centers run on an academic year schedule, so we applied during the fall when I was pregnant, got accepted off the wait list in the spring when lo1 was born, and started the next fall when she was 6 months
