My son has bigger feet and is in 1st grade. But we have still been able to find him velcro shoes and therefore he doesn't know how to tie.
When did your kids learn?

hmm, age 5/6? but my child still struggles with it, he never gets it tight enough and his double-knot is not good... i need to re-teach him.

This was a requirement/something that they taught in kindergarten here. They had to know their parents phone number, their address, how to put on a coat by themselves, and how to tie their shoes.

@hellobeeboston: Yes, I feel like as a boy he just doesn't care and is happy to just get his shoes on fast so he can run and go play.

DD is almost six and can't do it yet. We've tried to teach her a few times but it hasn't clicked yet. Our elementary school actually requested that all kindergartners stay in velcro shoes this year because teachers won't help them tie their laces. (Obviously, their aren't requiring it or making it a big issue, but we were happy to cooperate.) I figure we will just keep showing her and it will click eventually.

I think we taught Ethan in first grade. He's still not super great at it in 3rd grade but can get the job done.

DS is going to be 6 this month and doesn't know yet, I keep thinking I need to sit down and really teach him. His tennis shoes are tie so I have to tie them for him every morning and double knot so they last the whole day.
I'm thinking once it snows and he has to wear snow boots /put shoes on at school this will become more of an issue too. Ideally he'd learn at school

I'm embarrassed to say that my 3rd grader still doesn't know! All the shoes he likes have been velcro. I should probably work on teaching him...

@josina: I’m worried about the boot issue at school! My son is in kindergarten but I haven’t tried to teach him yet. I need to get him boots too, I guess I need to make sure that he can take them off and on by himself

After she turned 7 halfway through 1st grade, I think. She just decided to do it in order to get the shoes and that was it! I suspect my 2nd will be taught by her and not me, which sounds pretty good!

My 6 year old doesn’t know. I bought him some converses - they were the only non dress shoes I could find with laces but he isn’t interested to learn.

I want to say it was first grade/second grade. She's in 3rd and still isn't stellar at it. But, she prefers flats and Uggs, so there also isn't a lot of practice happening...

My 7-year old is able to do it, my 5-year old is really wanting to learn it so I suppose she’ll have it figured out soon.

B will be 7 in January and he doesn’t know. Every so often he expresses interest in learning but then ties seven knots in his shoes and loses interest.

After reading/commenting on this thread, I've been making my son tie and double knot his shoes every day, and after a week of focusing on it again and really trying to perfect it, he's been nailing it!

@KT326: My 2nd grader doesn't know and he's about to turn 8. All his shoes have been velcro and his school has encouraged velcro! We were planning on teaching him with his soccer shoes but were always running late and kept forgetting. Guess we should break them back out and teach both kids!

It is something they are supposed to know before kindergarten here too. No personal experience yet though!

Second grade. But DS is in third grade and still struggles. It takes him like 10 minutes to tie or untie. A couple of days ago I showed him how to do it again, because his laces kept coming untied, and apparently, the first time he hadn't understood an important part of the process and was all "Why didn't you tell me earlier???!!!"

He’s 6 and I haven’t taught him yet. Late last year, I decided to teach him and bought a pair of shoes with laces. By the time i got around to it, he had already outgrown the shoes and I tabled the issue again...

We just bought our almost 6-year-old a pair of tie shoes this weekend. She specifically asked so she could be part of the “tying school club at school.”
Apparently if your in the “club” you’re in charge of tying the shoes of everyone that doesn’t know how. She definitely can’t now, but we’ll see how much she wants to join the “club.”
