Tell him at dinner you're whisking him away, which will give him a chance to do some last minute things like perhaps put his out of office message on his work email. Still make the destination a surprise. Very fun!

I did something similar for my 1st anniversary, but I couldn't completely keep the international trip a surprise because I had to make sure DH brought his passport with him. We didn't live together when we first got married.

Have you taken care of the work aspect? My old work buddy was whisked away to Mexico for his birthday one year. His wife literally woke him up and would not tell him where they were going till he caught on at the airport! But his best friend was in on it and she also took care of the work aspect for him.

I'd tell him the night before that you're going on vacation but let him figure out where one you're at the airport.

Eta: I voted airport.

Night before. It's very sweet, but if that was sprung on me only at the airport I would be really stressed out even though it had all been organized and my stuff had been packed. You know him best though.

I agree with keeping the location a surprise, but saying it is a vacation with a plane involved.

Depends on your spouse. I LOVE surprises and would try not to know until I was on the actual plane. My husband HATES surprises and would want to know much more in advance.

I didn't vote b/c it depends if he takes surprises well, if there's anything he'd need/want to take care of before, etc. But if he's game for anything, I'd just tell him a little bit at a time for a build up!

I did this with a Disney trip for DH a few years back... I made sure he had no weekend plans of his own by filling our calendar with fake.stuff, then said we were meeting friends for happy hour and drove us straight to the airport instead of the restaurant! All our friends were in on it, so he was so surprised! Good luck!
