Both of my kids had flat/weird shaped heads when they were infants.. The flatness fixed itself when they started flipping over and sleeping on their sides and bellies.

Our lo was only two months when it was brought up by the ped. BUT the insurance didn't approve the helmet and she never got one, so she (just like me!) still has a rather large flat spot. We would have done more anyway if she was a boy but since we figured her hair would grow anyway, it hasn't been a big deal. Her hair is growing in and you almost can't tell now.

ETA And a neurologist said part of hers was genetic, so we had that going against us. The helmet would not have fixed the flattest part of her head.

@Zbug: I was the same way between going back and forth from freaking to not worried to freaking.

Her head was REALLY flat at 3 months..,it got worse until 4 months then it got much much better. As her head control improved she started spending more time on her belly (didn't hate tummy time as much), in her bumbo, jumperoo etc. now at 5 months it has improved so much that I'm not worried about it . The dr saw it at its worst and wasn't concerned so it helped me get through month 4-5!

Our pediatrician pointed it out when J was a few months old. We were told to move his head to the other side while he was sleeping (flat head was on the left side) so that it would balance it out. Problem was he would keep switching to the other side. We were also told to do lots of tummy time. Luckily, he did grow out of it and it was gone well before his 1st birthday. I would definitely ask the pediatrician because it is something you can correct fairly easily early on, but is harder to fix after they turn 1 I believe.

I was very concerned about my LO's flat head. It became noticeable to friends and strangers around 4 months, and my pediatrician just told me to move her head to the other side and do a lot of tummy time. Well, it kept getting worse and I am not a fan of the "wait and see if a problem develops" because by then, it's usually too late. My friend recommended me this pillow:

I know you're not supposed to use pillows, but we got the okay from the pediatrician, and by the time we went back for an appointment at 5 months, the flatness had gone down considerably, and by 6 months, it was not noticeable any more. For us, I attribute the results ALLLLL to that pillow! Without it, she would sure have needed a helmet. I can't say if the results would generalize, but it worked for us.

@Zbug: you're welcome! I think the two are similar so if you ordered the noggin nest, try that first! I saw results pretty fast (within 2 weeks I'd say). I used it wherever she was sleeping, so at that time it was the crib, swing, or rnp. It never affected her sleep at all!
