We started with one at six months! We never really spoon fed him. We just load it up and give it to him. I'd say experiment as you like! They seem to catch on really quickly. We usually do pretty heavy stuff though, like mashed sweet potato. Now we are trying to get him off the spoon and onto finger foods.....he is 7.5 months now.

@Mrsbells: pretty much! Well, we have to put the stuff on it for him and IT IS MESSY! But he gets plenty to eat, if that makes sense! Have you tried a mesh feeder with your LO? Mine is obsessed with spoons so he was immediately motivated to self-feed with one. But if I didn't have a kid who literally tantrums when he sees a spoon, I'd start with one of those and work my way up!

My 26 month old did tons of finger foods for the first 18 months but when she started preschool 2 months ago, she started practicing a lot. Last night she was eating huge bites of cereal and didn't spill a drop of milk off of her spoon. I consider that a milestone. She still gives up (in an efficient sort of way) early and drops her utensils in favor of using her fingers if hungry. I'm interested in hearing responses too b/c I think this may be slightly on the later side. My friend was insisting on utensils (at restaurants) from her same aged daughter from 1 year.
