I probably waited too long because I don't think she needed it anymore but I was kind of scared to do it. We got rid of it at 15 months. I didn't want it to go beyond 18 months for sure. So I took it away cold turkey and she could not have cared less so I was right that she didn't need it anymore.

RJ used a pacifier for sleep pretty much all day and night when he was an infant, but once he found his fingers, he didn't need it anymore. I can't remember how old he was. He still sucks on his fingers sometimes to fall asleep for naps and during the nighttime, and he's 2. Since he only does it for sleeping time, I don't see the need to break the habit until it becomes a teeth issue.

For those that still use them past the 6 month or so mark, how did you deal with their need for it at night but also them not being able to put it back in themselves? He depends on it (4 months) to fall asleep and it will them fall out (or he'll spit it out) but will wake up and cry and want it back. Any solutions?

@venice4504: Around 6 months of age when my son lost his paci during the night and would cry we'd help him locate it but he figured out ways to get it to his mouth.

We plan to take it away around 1 year of age. He'll have to move up to toddlers at daycare and pacifiers aren't allowed in toddlers so we'll have to wean him off it anyway.

We are keeping the paci. I really don't want ds sucking his thumb or fingers. He's at an in-home daycare so there is no limit that he has to stop by. I think we will try to wean by 2. I try not to let him use it too much during the day (he's 9 months now) but he uses it when he's tired or fussy. And he uses it to sleep. Usually we have to get up to put it back in his mouth, but he doesn't usually wake up missing it during the night. Now he's learning to put it in his mouth himself.
