I asked my DS at age 4 - he picked dinosaurs.
eta: I always did a theme of what I knew they liked but never actually asked until age 4

ASAP! I wish L had a clear preference of something for her 1st birthday. She didn't particularly love anything though. Hopefully by 2 I can tell if something is her *favorite*

Probably this year at 2. She has favorite things already.

Probably 3, but he didn't have a party then, so it was 4. It was funny, cause he insisted on a Thomas the Train party, but then Captain America came out and once he saw the cake for it at the bakery, he instantly changed his mind to a Captain America themed party, lol.

I think I will have to do that next year so that would be 4. He was just starting to get into birthdays right before he turned 3 but I didn't ask him, just gave him some options and asked him to pick.

When she's old enough, probably next year at 3. This year we are doing an Elmo party (even though I don't want to do an Elmo party) but she loves that muppet!

@mrsjazz: Thank you for that. My SIL refuses to let her son's pick their Halloween costumes and parties cause she doesn't like characters. Huh? They are kids, let them be kids. They are 7 and almost 4.

We are coming up on Little Boy's 3rd birthday and I've asked him but every time the answer is different, usually he just says whatever the theme was at the last party we went to. Probably by next year he will be more opinionated.

My little guy turns 3 in a month and very clearly wanted a jake pirate birthday party. So we will comply and have a jake pirate party.

As soon as she shows a strong preference for something. Until then...it'll be whatever I like best haha.

J1 asked for a Thomas party for his 2nd bday, but he was way ahead verbally. I don't think J2 understands what a bday party is yet So maybe he will have an opinion next year.

Once we start school-- we're only having a big 1st birthday and won't do any "parties" until she's school aged. She's turning 2 this year and we're just going out to dinner and having grandparents over for presents.

DD will be 4 next week and we've never asked her for a theme but have tried to theme around things she liked at the time. Although our parties are just family at this point but it influences the cake design.
1st - butterflies
2nd - her lovey (got an ice cream cake with her lovey's picture)
3rd - party hat (what she told us she wanted for her birthday)
4th - ??

I think as soon as they can tell me what they want! I'll probably pick their first birthday theme on my own, but for their second I will try to pick a theme based on what they really love. After that hopefully they can tell me what they want.

@Smurfette: I agree with 3. You better do that sprinkles party while you can!

3 or 4. I want one more year of it being a non-character party since I'm sure that's what she will pick.
grapefruit / 4120 posts
At 2 I knew what he liked and based it on that and at 3 I asked him outright. He changed his mind a few times but we went with one of the ideas

Whenever they're old enough to ask! With filters, of course!

3. I would let her pick at 2 except I already bought all the decorations because they were on super sale and were adorable. Hopefully she'll be on board with a princesses and knights party!
Though if she's totally crazy about elmo or something I could probably hold onto the decorations until the inevitable moment when she asks for a princess party.

I'll start at 4!
We're not having a real party this year, but she's crazy about princesses, so I ordered a Disney princess cake from publix omg so cute. And ordered some princess wands and halos from etsy for her and her cousins.

As soon as she can express preference, I think. Even for her first birthday coming up this summer, I chose a food she loves, and am designing the theme/menu around the fruit.

Whenever she wants. She already has VERY clear opinions about what she likes/dislikes, so she'll probably want to choose next year.

Never. I'm throwing the party. I think I'll probably pretty in tune with what they like though and I'd only pick something they obviously like. Like next year Zuma will probably want a Michael Jackson themed 1st bday party. And I'm one step ahead of her!

As soon as she makes a request? Her 1st party was based on just how much she loves the movie Rio and birds… so I guess she's already picked? Because if it we up to me, it would have been all delicate pink and glittery, but she seems to love blue and birds.

Well at two years old I chose balloons because they're his favorite and he had a blast! Until he can voice what he wants specifically, I choose based on what he likes maybe for his third he will be able to pick?
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@smurfette, that seems excessively controlling. This is probably the only year we'll be able to pick E's halloween costume before she shows a preference, so we chose the abominable snowman. Weird sense of humor here (and a PBK sale)
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@blackbird: I agree. His 4th bday party is 80's theme. You know cause he was around to remember what the 80's were like.....
and I can't wait to see pictures at halloween!
nectarine / 2878 posts
I will probably ask him at 3 but will still gear his 2nd towards his preferences.
pomelo / 5720 posts
@anonysquire: lol.
I think I'll probably start picking things this year (2) that I know he likes. I'm sure it will be something truck/car related. I'll ask him what he wants probably starting at age 3.
