Was it just like any other day?
My mom took me and my BFF out to celebrate
She took my sister out when she started too!
I think I am in the minority though!
Did your mom do anything?

I think I was in 7th or 8th grade. Can't even remember! My mom didn't do anything.

Nope, nothing special. It was the summer before 9th grade and I was almost 14.

I was in 6th grade. That morning I had gone to the Orthodontist to have my braces adjusted, so my mom was letting me stay home the rest of the day. My dad was also sick at home. I went to the bathroom when I got home and realized I got my first period. I tried to get my mom's attention from the bathroom, but she was busy making soup for my dad so I sat in the bathroom for like 10 minutes until she finally came and gave me some pads lol. It wasn't a traumatizing experience at all and I'm glad I had proper sex ed by then that explained what a period was.
My youngest sister flipped. her. shit. when she got her first period because she had no idea what it was. I guess her school wasn't as great with the sex education.

I was that total moron who didn't know what it was and thought I was sick lol. Not because I didn't understand that women got periods (I was 13, so lots of my friends had them at that point), but because it just wasn't what I expected. I told my mom I was sick and told her why, she told me I got my period and I was like... man this sucks. Then she was like "ummm congratulations?" and I was like "ummm thanks? But I'm not happy about this." and she was like "yea I never got the being happy about it thing either. Sorry." lol

@Mae: yeah my mom was like "yay you're a woman" I was like "Nope, I'm 13, I'm a kid!!!"

I was in 8th grade outside in gym class running the mile. That was fun... I came home at the end of the day and I remember telling my mom and her being excited? She didn't do anything otherwise

No and I was SO embarrassed to tell my mom. I was 10 and she hadn't really talked to me about it yet (I only learned about it at school). All my sisters started at 13 so she probably thought she had time.

I had a total crisis. I was 11, almost 12... so young! I knew what it was and knew all about it but I couldn't deal with the inevitable aging process LOL

I was 10 and my mom was out of town. I jumped on my bed and told my dad I could have a baby. He wasn't too impressed with my declaration. LOL My bff lived down the street and was a couple years older. So we talked about it. My mom says i called my God mom before her, which is a sore spot. I don't remember it like that at all though.

I think I was 12, can't remember what happened but there was certainly no celebrating.

It was horrible. HORRIBLE.
It was may, and my parents were in Las Vegas for a week so us kids were with my aunt & grandma. Early in the week I started having excruciating stomach pains and spent most of the week in pain and uncomfortable. I even went to the ER, and my mom took me for bloodwork when she got home. My white blood cell count was low, but not low enough to be mono, and I had been running a fever that whole week.
Over Memorial Day, I got my first period. I was 11. My fever broke, pain went away & my repeat bloodwork was normal.
Ever since, I've gotten a fever & horrible pains during my period.

I was young, 4th grade, so it was slightly traumatic. My mom kept her cool and it wasn't so bad. It felt a little weird because it wasn't really even on the horizon for any of my friends so I felt like I had to keep it a secret. I like the idea of making it a celebration though!

I was really young (9 years old) & thought I had made a mess in my underwear so I hid them in the bottom of the washing pile. Luckily my mum found them on the same day & explained what was happening. She made a real fuss of me & I remember feeling very grown up, I was even allowed to skip dance class because I didn't want to wear a leotard with a pad. Overall a confusing but positive experience for me!

It was a week after I turned 12. We had just come home from breakfast after we went to church. I think my mom knew what happened by the sound of my yell. She threw me a pad and later gave me a book.

I got it while staying at my aunts house 3 hours away from home. Worse than that, I was at a sleepover at some girl I didn't even really know. I woke up, freaked out, and her mom was SO nice about it all. My aunt picked me up and I went back to her place and called my mom to tell her.
When I got back home a few days later my dad tried to make it a "celebration" because he read in one of his "raising confident daughters" book that you should. OMG so awkward. He learned to not do that by his 4th daughter !! Lol

I was in the 6th grade*. My friend was spending the night and we got up really early to go play tennis. I had to sneak into my mom's bathroom to get a pad, which I had NO idea how to use (I tried to put it in my underwear before putting the underwear on...)
After a while I was able to shake off my friend and go tell my mom. She took me out for a women's day, and I was SO embarrassed. I think I would have preferred we just pretend nothing had happened!
*Thinking back I may have actually been in 5th grade. I was the first of all my friends, which made it super awkward.

I was 10...I totally knew what periods were but was too afraid to tell my stepmom so I stole some pads from her and told my friends instead! One day she found them in my bag and came up to me at school in the middle of the day which was absolutely mortifying. I mean, she couldn't wait until I got home? She had to do that to me IN FRONT OF THE BOYS?!

I was 12. Summer after 6th grade. I was suppose to go to the mall with a friend and I woke up to my period. I was kind of confused so I asked my sister if it was for sure my period. I called my friend and had her bring me a pad before we went to the mall. I hated the pad so much I ended up buying a tampon from one of those dispensers in the bathroom. I didn't live with my mom. Just my dad and sister. I can't even remember if I told my mom or my sister did for me.

I was really young as well (only nine years old) and we were in the middle of a family hiking trip on a 95 degree day in the middle of July. Of course it happened at the bottom of the valley and we had to cut our day short because of it and then spend the next two or so hours hiking back up a really steep trail. It was absolutely horrible and traumatizing and the overwhelming memory for me the entire time was thinking that I was going to pass out (and being super embarrassed that people passing us along the way kept stopping and asking if I was alright because my face was beat red) and my mom saying over and over again, "You're growing up so fast! You're a woman now!" Ugh. Talk about something awkward to hear at nine years old. I was so so embarrassed and just wanted the day to be over.

I was 14 and I was so embarrassed to tell my mom. And I was not excited about getting it. Who's happy to bleed every month for the rest of their lives (well, until menopause). Ugh.

I was at my friend's 12th birthday party (I was 11). We were inside of Claire's at the mall and I felt something... I just KNEW what it was.
My friend's mom gave me a pad, and then I pranced around the rest of the day like I was on top of the world. I was the only girl at the party who had started her period yet, so I was bragging to everyone "Guess what? I am wearing a pad right now. I started my period." I was so proud of myself.
So embarrassing.

I was 13 and in 8th grade. We were on vacation, and I was not excited.
Making it a celebration sounds like a great idea, though!

I was 11 and it was summer vacation. I was at a friends house but luckily my mom had discussed it with me ahead of time and I carried a pad in my purse. I was so excited to be grown up!

I was like 15 so we weremore in the camp of "it's about time" than anything. I was well aware of what was going on since I was such a late bloomer & was embarrassed it was so late ha!

I was 8 and it was in the summer. I had no clue what was happening. My mom had to sit me down and tell me.

I didn't even tell my mom. I knew where she kept so her supplies, so I just took some and she never noticed. She found out months later while doing laundry and some of my undies had period stains.

It was a week after my thirteenth birthday in 7th grade. Nothing special happened. I don't even remember how/if I told my mom, but I know I was always mortified to talk to her about it. The day was much less traumatic than I'd expected, considering all I really knew about menstruation came from the scene in "My Girl" when Vada shouts that's she's hemorrhaging.

I was 13. Nothing traumatic. We had been out shopping all day & when I came home I noticed something on my underwear, so I wiped, saw blood & went & told my mom. She was happy but didn't do anything special. I was super excited. I wrote down the date in a journal & everything. I was the last of my friends to get it, on top of being coined the "smart" & "good" one so I felt like I finally fit in somehow. (Oh, the tween years!)

I was 12 and I was so embarrassed. I got picked up from school by my mom and I told her in the car. She gave me pads when we got home. I also remember when I needed tampons for the first time... omg.

@pui: lol! Similar situation here!
I was 10 - summer before 6th grade - and I knew what it was so I screamed and screamed for my mom's attention (I was so mad I started my period! And even more mad she didn't hear me.) I sat there until she FINALLY came in. I remember her asking if she could tell my dad. I said no! Then she had to go to the store for pads.
Ugh.
