Does the host/hostess ever ask if you want a kid's menu? This has happened to us twice in the past few weeks and it blows my mind. Last weekend the hostess brought over crayons for her "in case she wanted to color." She's 5 months old!! She is not eating solids yet, and even if she were we wouldn't be ordering an enchilada for her!

Yup always. Crayons, cups of water, and kids menus. We were once told that they could "get the baby some spaghetti". Um yeah, no.

I guess they just have to check! In case a small looking baby is actually a one year old that can eat? And color? LOL. I dunno!

I actually liked when they have LO crayons, even before she could use them she liked to shake the little box they come in to make sounds, and play with (read: crumple and eat) the children's menu!

haha...yes. the most ridiculous was when they brought the baby a fork and knife...ya, we got rid of those fast! lol

@Andrea: Complete opposite here - I'm 23 and I never get carded when I buy alcohol for cooking. I look young too! It scares me that they don't seem to card at my grocery stores!

What is funny is when LO was 6-10 months they would do it all the time. She is now 13 months and we have gone out 3-4 times in the last month (lots of birthdays and celebrations) and they haven't asked!

DS was all about coloring though from very early on, some places I had to ask for crayons

@rachiecakes: Yeah, I am sure they are just being polite. The first time we got asked I actually giggled because I thought she was joking. Now I just say no thank you and smile because it doesn't surprise me anymore.

@Arden: that was a loooong phase for us! But LO would spend forever working at getting the crayon box open and getting them out to eat them, which bought us quiet time!

@lawbee11: hehe - J's such a picky eater, we don't usually order a kids meal for him, he just eats from our plates. I can't tell you how many times they've asked, "and what's he having?" "nothing for your little boy?" Makes me feel so bad. But he's 2, he's picky, we try to feed him at home if it's somewhere I know he's going to turn up his nose at everything, but it's like I'm starving him...

I think they also just have no clue. Until I was in my late 20s and had friends with kids, I had no idea at what age kids did things.
What drives me nuts is when three or four people try to bring me a high chair to put her carrier in after I've told them no thank you. That is not safe and the carrier is fine on the floor, thank you.

all the time. but what's weirder is when we've obviously cleared out everything from her reach at the table and they put a large hot plate/sharp object down right in front of her in her highchair! i always have to snatch whatever it is away quickly before she burns her hands on hot pizza cheese or breaks the wine glass. come on now!

ha, sounds like most of you haven't waited tables. You're basically running on autopilot.
I used to be asked to give soda in sippy cups, so you'd be surprised what people will ask for and feed their baby.

I agree, they have no clue. See a small person and offer kids' menu, high chair, etc. When I worked in a restaurant, I had no idea when kids started eating solids or sitting unsupported!

LOL, it hasn't happened to us yet (3 months) but that's funny!
Before I was married and thinking about kids, I really had NO idea what age those things became appropriate. So I totally get that they're erring on the side of being helpful!

Agree with Blackbird! I had people ask for sodas in sippy cups ALL THE TIME. I think it's apparent by looking at the American public that the average american is not as health concious as HB, and that extends to the average american child.
I waitressed at Olive Garden and it was a regular occurance to have a family come in and the parents would order entrees but the kids would just eat breadsticks. Now that I'm a mom, I can't imagine giving my child 6 sodium and hydrogenated fat-laden breadsticks for their lunch and nothing else. And yes, Sodas in the kids cup we had for kiddos.

This hasn't happened to us yet, but we always get asked if we want a high chair (as in for him to sit in) or a booster chair.... *blink blink* *blank stare* Seriously?! DS is 5.5 months old, but these comments started when he was 3-4 months?

yes, we get this, but it doesn't bother me. it's probably just part of their protocol and they don't want to make a mistaken judgment and offend someone, and/or they're not familiar with babies and what's appropriate at what age. even having a baby, i'm pretty bad at judging the age of other babies.

Am I the only that this has never happened too?? R is 10 months and been in a high chair for 4-5 months and not once have they asked.
