When I tell people I'm Korean, I get a lot of "I LOVE Korean food!!!"
Someone just told me she's Greek and I was really close to saying I love Greek food. HAHAHAAH @mamamoose!

No, my ethnicity isn't that exciting. But if I say I'm Jewish, some people will say matzo ball soup. I think most people don't even know what Jewish food is though.

@artbee: You're Jewish?! I love Challah bread!!!! HAHA
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
Well I'm just an average white girl so no! Lol! But I don't say that to other people.

I'm Lebanese (only half), and many people think I'm kidding, because I'm super pale and blonde. But I don't think I've had anyone say "I LOVE Lebanese food". Maybe because that's no one knows what it is??
However, bring up falafel or shwarma, and people come out of the woodwork.

@redsmarties: Yum, I love falafel! I've been craving good falafel, we don't have any great places here for it.

@artbee: I'm in a tiny town right now, so there's no good ethnic food at all. But when I visit Ottawa or Toronto, I load up. So GOOD.
And my hubby's dad was Jewish, so he's got the basics down pat. Can't wrap my mind around gefilte fish, however.

Haha, too funny! The other thing I get all the time is people wanting to take me out for Japanese food.
In a similar vein, someone gave me a doll of a geisha once for my birthday. I was 30 at the time.

@redsmarties: Gross, I hate gefilte fish.. The juices always ruin my Passover plate. Yuck. We only have big chains like Pita Pit. Sometimes I'll get it just because, but it's never the same as the good stuff I got in Israel!

When I tell people I'm Korean, they always bring up kimchi at some point.

Lol! I'm Irish and people generally think its hilarious to ask about alcohol tolerance & if I like potatoes.

HAHA, I don't think so. That would be so funny. I would tell them that "sesame chicken" is not real Chinese food. HAHAHAHA!

@SorryCharlie: I am 1/4 Irish and 1/4 Cherokee (and French and Dutch), and I get asked about alcohol tolerance, too, but not about potatoes (or french fries, for that matter!).

I don't say that to people. Though... my co-worker is Indian and when she brings in Samosas I make sure to tell her she makes the best Samosas ever. She does!

@redsmarties: mmmmmm mujaddara! Lol!
How do we always end up talking about food? I don't have pregnancy as an excuse for wanting food randomly anymore......

LOL. I think that's only happened a couple times with Chinese food, but never for Filipino food. I don't think many people try Filipino food in general, though.

I think my husband (Thai) has gotten this a couple of times.
As a pasty white girl, I haven't experienced it, EXCEPT for in college, when a weirdo who lived in my dorm found out I was from Ohio and was convinced that I ate a lot of stew because of that. I have no earthly clue where he got that.

I've never had anyone say this to me but I've wanted to say it to others before. I love trying new foods!

Yes. I think it's an automatic when you say your Italian.

I don't get the food comment as much as people asking me if I've ever gone to China or they tell me about their travels to China.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
Yup or about their travel experience to Korea (aka my boss' boss at my interview)

@chopsuey119: Hahaha I just saw this! I actually don't get a whole lot of this.. until I make Greek food for them. Spanikopita from scratch is a big favorite. Once people have eaten my spanikopita, then I get constant requests to make it again and again : )

Another Jewish person here...and Jewish food isn't that great, so I never get the food comment.

@redsmarties: OMG I LOVE shwarma - sorry, just had to. But I seriously do! I used to live in Detroit and they had a huge population and I fell in love with shwarma and the garlic sauce they use. I have never been able to figure out how to make it!

I'm Black. Soooo no. If I got an, "oh I love fried chicken!" we'd have problems!
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
I'm Cuban, so I have gotten that a lot. I didn't really grow up eating Cuban food though, so I actually don't love it!
honeydew / 7589 posts
No, but Scottish brings up... what, haggis? Hah! I don't think people have a food association with Scots, so they just go "Oh, that's why you have red hair and freckles."
grapefruit / 4770 posts
@Arden: whhaaa lmao. Can you just imagine that? I'd be like um.....turn and leave turn and leave!
grapefruit / 4554 posts
No food comments when I tell them I'm chinese, but I get alot of "ni hao ma?" ("how are you"-mandarin) I just smile politely and say fine.
