We ran into this for the first time this weekend. LO just didn't want to do anything besides play peekaboo with the table behind us. What made it worse was that all she wanted was me so I couldn't even eat any of my dinner.

I get embarassed too, but at this point C has only done the "someone is murdering me" scream in public.

If it's an angry loud noise, I try to do whatever I can to quiet her down, even if it means going outside. If it's a happy loud noise, I usually laugh and sort of jokingly shush her. I don't want people to think I'm ignoring my shrieking baby, but I also don't feel like I need to actually stop her from being (loudly) happy at this point. She's only 6 months old!

We used to take turns eating. At the age where DD started shrieking (around 5 or 6 months, maybe?) she couldn't understand the concept of volume control, but we also didn't feel comfortable allowing her to continue to make loud noises (especially if it was a small or quiet restaurant). So one of us would take her outside or to the lobby while the other one ate, and then we'd switch off. She grew out of it within a few months.

@autumnlove: That is their problem not yours. You are in a perfectly appropriate family setting and your child is being well mannered. They aren't running around or screaming bloody murder. You were also attempting to deal with the situation.

As parents, we always feel like our childrens behavior is worse than others perceive it. I took my son to a sporting event on Thursday. I felt like he was just so difficult. But as we left, the woman behind us told us how fantastic our son had been.

Another funny story, my sister took her 9 month old on a plane trip. On the return flight the woman next her her obviously wanted nothing to do with a baby. And he was a bit fussy. But after calming him in the back, she came back to find the woman, with her head on the random strangers shoulder and feet on my sister's seat. Much worse than a little baby.
