We want to get our daughter a bike for her birthday. Where did you go to find one for your child? She has asked us for a very easy to find "Princess and Pony" bike. I figure Walmart may be a good place?

We bought her bike from a licensed bike shop. The people at Walmart don't really know how to put bikes together and their bikes are really heavy compared to one that costs a bit more at the bike shop.

Toys R Us also has a ton of in stock bikes. I'm looking online as well.

We looked and called around to used kids stores, if we timed it right we prob could have found one but we didn't get lucky. So dh took her to bike stores for her bday. It was a bit more than big box stores but the components are more durable and should last through several kids. We got it for her when she turned 3 and got the 16" wheels.

A specialty store. We wanted a very specific bike and only a couple of retailers had them in store to try.

Cool! We also want to get a real bike for DS's bday. I think we'll go to a good bike shop where people know what they're talking about. I already have a brand in mind that was recommended by a bike-knowledgable friend.

@pregnantbee: What brand are you looking at? H has a Giant bike and we've been really happy with them (all of our bikes are Giant).

We bought him a bike from Target last year. He is outgrowing it now so we might go to a local store that has a trade in program. If you trade in a kids bike that was purchased through them during the first year, you will get 40% of the price back. If you trade it in within 2 years you get 30%. I also want to go somewhere that will assemble the bike for me! It was a pain to do at home!

@avivoca: Specialized. I know nothing about bikes, but I trust my friend's taste. DH and I don't have bikes....so this kind of means we'll need to get some, too. Eek.

We went to REI to get LO's first real bike. Tricycle and balance bikes were purchased through Amazon.

We got my DD1's 16 inch Schwinn cruiser at TRU, and my DD2's 12 inch Diamondback at REI.

Walmart/Target/Toysrus. No need to get an expensive bike since they will outgrow them and kids at the 2-6 year range can't tell a cheap bike from an expensive bike. They'll be happy that they got a bike. If you have a handy spouse, just have them put the bike together.

Toys R Us was the only place we could find what LO asked for and for a reasonable price.

@chopstixwife: I've actually read some articles on how the cheaper bikes tend to be heavier and have different centers of gravity so they're much more difficult for young kids to balance to and to learn to ride.

@ShootingStar: Absolutely this. This is why we bought our daughter a really well made bike for her to learn on. But biking is kind of our family sport, so it was important to us to find one that she would love and really enjoy riding. She's also tiny so it'll last a long time.
