We got our cat from a farm when she was just 6-8 weeks old. We eventually want to adopt a cat from a shelter, one that is older or has been there a while.
Where did you get your pet(s) from?

Dh got our dog before I knew him when he was 4 months old from a rescue group. He was brought back twice before he got him.

From a rescue group that gets puppies and dogs from shelters where they are going to be put down for not having enough room. They do awesome work!

all homeless kittens that we've found. one was found at my mom's house, the other two I found in a shed behind where we were living in town.

Local rescue group. He was just supposed to be a foster, and then DH got attached. (I love my dog, but I'd have been willing to give him up to another good home, but DH decided he was OUR DOG. He is a pretty great dog :))

We have three cats. The first one (Kai) we got from an old coworker. His stepdaughter's friend had dropped it off at their house...apparently the girl's female cat had kittens off of a stray. My coworker already had 2 high needs cats, so I adopted him.
The second one (Penny) adopted us. She was a street kitty, and one night we were playing cards on a friend's porch in West Philly and she walked up like she owned the place and sat in my lap. A random stray! She was in bad shape, too...really emaciated, dirty...she's a very pretty pure white cat (although she has a funny smushy face).
Our baby (Zelda) we adopted from a family who listed her litter on craigslist. She was exactly what we wanted (a calico), and we ended up taking a train an hour out of the city to get her. When we got her home we realized the poor thing was covered in fleas. It took several baths and combings, and ultimately a shot at the vet to get rid of them. And she was tiny....the vet guessed her age at 4 weeks, and we got her a week prior. I felt awful for months about taking her away from her mom so young, but they weren't wanted, and I ultimately decided she was better off with us.
All three of our babies (from left: Zelda, Penny, & Kai).

My DH had our big dog when we met. He got him at the pound. We bought the cat at a local pet store. She looked sooo sad and we couldn't leave her there. My DH bought our chihuahua from a breeder. She was a surprise for me.

I rescued my dog from Arkansas from a fantastic rescue group.

DH had our dogs before I met him...although one was just a puppy, so I say he baited me with him, lol. Anyways, he got them both from breeders.
I got my Tabby cat from a pet store, and DH got Zeus (in my avatar) from the pound when he was just an itty bitty kitten last September.

I got my dog from rescue group in NY-- they brought dogs up from shelters in the South. He was about a year old when I got him and now he is 10! This was while DH were pretty early days of dating so he is still more MY dog than OUR dog.

@Bao: I got two really great ones that day, hope you don't mind me posting the other.

@FutureMrsMcK: Great pic! I have a similar one of Zeus doing the same thing! We're staying with my parents, and he's just discovered squirrels, lol.

@Bao: Sadly we don't live there anymore (that was from Pittsburgh, we're closer to Philly now). I loved that sun-room, it was hexagon-shaped and had 3 walls of windows. So bright all of the time, so nice to relax with a book in there. Sigh.

Both of our cats are from shelters. We adopted our one cat when she was a kitten. She was neglected and had an eye removed as a result. We adopted her because my husband was afraid nobody else would want a kitten with one eye!
Our other cat was malnourished... they thought he was a young kitten but he ended up being closer to 6 months old. We are definitely shelter people!

Dh got our cat when he was really young from a animal shelter and we got our dog from some people that had to get rid of her because she was a little too friendly with their cattle.

@swedishfish: Do you mind posting on my wall what rescue? I'm originally from AR and used to do a lot of fostering
Wondering if you may have gotten your pup from one I worked with!

We got our lab mix from a friend who rescued his litter from an animal control officer. We went to 'look'. Uhh, when chubby little yellow puppies are involved, there is no 'looking'. We went home with a pup!
My college boyfriend got me my two yorkies from a show breeder his parents are friends with. They were a surprise. I love them so much but I've always felt guilty that they came from a breeder.

Awww. I got my chihuahua mix from a rescue group in Upstate NY. She was being bred as a miniature pinscher at a puppy mill - she MIGHT have little min pin in her, but I think she's mainly a chihuahua with the same color pattern as a min pin. She was forced to have a litter pretty much every time she went into heat, and developed a hernia from having too many litters too close together. The puppy mill had no use for her once she had a hernia so they dropped her at a shelter and a rescue group put her in a foster home. I adopted her and have had her for 5+ years. She had a rough life before, but she's spoiled now, and super sweet.

Both of our kitties were from unwanted, accidental litters. I drove over an hour both times to pick them up. Totally worth it.

First dog was from a breeder (I had a very specific and not recognized by the akc breed in mind). Second was from a rescue group. Third we 'rescued' from my MIL :P.
All three cats were from shelters/rescues.
@Pepper: we have a one eyed cat as well for the same reason! Her litter was found in a dumpster and it was infected beyond repair.

Our big lug of a dog came from the local Humane Society. We got him when DH and I had been dating for only a few months, so he's definitely our dog. We got our kitty 6 months ago from a friend who's barn cat had kittens. She's a great playmate for our dog. The friend has since had her barn cat spayed, so good news there.

@JamieLee: That's adorable!
Our cat was from the local shelter and our dog was from a rescue group.

We rescued our dog from a local rescue. Best choice ever! I spent hours and hours going through Pet Finder until I spotted him the night he was posted. I emailed and called ASAP and it turns out no one had called on him yet. Everyone else missed out.

We got our dog from a "breeder". I have nothing against breeders, but ours ended up being more of a puppy mill so we got her out of there and filed complaints against them.

One came from the ASPCA in Durham. The other we were just supposed to foster for BTRNC but ended up adopting her sorry self.

Our first dog, we bought from a friend. He was living in a high rise and the puppy was constantly being crated.
Our second and third dog, we bought from breeders.
We'd love to adopt a dog in the future from a shelter though!

Our adult dog came from a shelter and our new dog was a foster failure (we foster dogs for a rescue but couldn't let this guy go)!

@StrawberryBee: Aww! Terrible that they had to have an eye removed, but kinda cool to find someone else with the same story. I'm very partial to one eyed cats, ours is so sweet!

Our dog came from a small local breeder, my BIL works for the owner. I was able to tour the farm to make sure it wasn't a puppy mill!

We got Findley from a reputable breeder... this is our last full day with him.
We will probably get our next pup from the same breeder.
