I grew up rurally - 5 acres of land, but neighbors within walking distance. We were 5 miles from the closest town which had a bank, small grocery store, a few pizza places, moving rental, salon and a few other knickknacks. There was no high school, so the next "big" town was 15 minutes away, and the big city was an hour. It's grown a lot though so it's not as rural/small, but my dad doesn't think it's rural enough.

DH grew up on Long Island, so not quite city but more than suburban. He loved it and really misses it.
