Burbs. And I still live there.

until i was 11, we lived in a rural town. like on a dirt road off of a dirt road! but we had neighbors, i would walk or ride my bike to friend's houses. i didn't go to school there though because the schools were awful, so i went to private school a half hour away. then we moved to a suburb/smallish town with about 18,000 people next to a small city of about 180,000 people. once we moved to the burbs, i went to public school with all the kids in our development. now DH & i live in the small city, he grew up here but didn't go to city schools, he went to private school. we like where we are now for the time being. i like being able to walk to a ton of stores, parks, farmer's markets, festivals and things. i still drive places, but i like that i don't feel stuck out in the middle of nowhere all alone. maybe someday, but i'm not ready for that yet =)

Rural - out in the country. We had a huge backyard and a ton of woods back there. We would play in the woods and the creek down deep in the woods. A friend of mine and I decided one day we would walk to the closest convenience store that was 4 miles away. We didn't realize it was so far until we got going..... Her brother happened to drive by and we hopped a ride to the store and back to home with him.

I loved growing up in the country. It could not have been a better place to grow up. Now I live in the suburbs and I'm not as happy. I either want to be back in the country again or in the city.

I grew up living in-town in a major city, and now live in-town in a small city (about 70k people in town I think). I never want to move to the 'burbs or live in a rural area.

@Coco Bee: It really wasn't that exciting, haha. It was basically a one-street town that was too small to qualify as a town, so it was categorized as a village instead!

In the city,

I grew up rurally; our town had about 2,000 people, and the nearest other towns were 1 hour either way. The nearest "big" towns were 4-5 hours away. It was a good place to grow up, though. I really loved it as a kid.

DH's parents were in the military so he moved around. He was born in a tiny little village in Germany, then moved to the suburbs in America, and now his parents live rurally, about 20 minutes from a bigger city.

None of the above, really. I grew up in Tulsa, which is a city but I wouldn't call it urban, and it's certainly not rural and not really suburban. I guess it's closest to suburban than anything else.

@Coco Bee: My DH is from Massapequa Park! His family still lives in Long Island. My dad's second wife is from LI also.
