I am in love with this one from Ballard Designs, but DH said he'd rather keep the cost of a bed around $500 or so.
Where do you suggest looking for a bed?

If you stalk HomeGoods they sometimes have some good deals. Also, I've heard Overstock.com can be good!

Oh! And World Market has some cool ones. They can be a bit over $500, but they have 50% furniture sales a few times a year.

We got ours at west elm. They have furniture sales pretty frequently

If you have a Queen, Overstock, Costco, and Joss & Main have really good deals! I had a hard time finding anything I liked under the $1000 range for our Cal King, but finally after 4+ years, I found one on Joss & Main (and Gilt had the same one)! Joss and Main has them all the time!

@shopaholic: THANK YOUUUUUUUUU!!! Our budget was $500 and I got a Joss & Main email today full of beautiful gorgeous upholstered beds! I scored this one for only $512. It's sooooo pretty. I am so excited, we haven't had a bed in years
I had told DH when we started looking that a high tufted headboard was my dream bed- but they were all $1500+ so I figured I'd never get it. aghhh I am so psyched.

@autumnlove: check out Joss and Main - great prices are gorgeous headboards. Right now they are having a sale of tons of them in pretty colors.

@Mrs. Pen: ftw! That's gorgeous and total score it being in budget! Woot Woot!

We have never had a headboard. It's the curse of apartment living-- we don't want to buy a lot just to fit an apartment we will move out of soon, but then, we won't be buying a place for another 2-4 years. If our next place can fit a king bed, I'm insisting that we get a proper bed and headboard then!

i wish we could have an upholstered headboard but our cat would just scratch it!!!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Mrs. Bee: haha we used to have a cat and he would have done the same thing. I'm glad we don't anymore
@Foodnerd81: We live in an apartment too. But I was tired of using that excuse to say I couldn't have a nice bedroom or livingroom. Our house doesn't match at all, it's such a mish mash of furniture and I hate it. It's so unmotivating. So with our tax return we decided to spruce things up a bit. A new bed for our room, a new couch for the livingroom I'm excited!

We are in the process of looking for a new bedroom suite for our new house. Upgrading to a king and putting our queen set in the guest room. I had been thinking for years I wanted to get an upholstered headboard but now I am rethinking it. I like to change our the linens every couple years, so I think that it would be harder to do with a upholstered. Shame, they are soo pretty!

@Smurfette: I love our current bedspread, it matches the "buckwheat" color of the bed perfectly. I feel that "buckwheat" is very neutral so it would be easy to change our duvet if we wanted to.

@Mrs. Pen: the color you picked it very neutral. I always use neutral colors, so not sure why I am scared to go with the upholstered cause I could always find something. Maybe cause DH didn't seem to be in love with the idea, and I feel bad spending that much money on something he doesn't want 100%. We found a wood set that we both really like, so I guess we will go with that. We need to get a move on it, we close on the 1st and need something delivered that next week.

@mrs. Pen Oh man, I just went to joss and main and I must talk DH into one of those headboards! The one you picked is great!

I was going to suggest you go to Joss and Main! DH and I made our tufted headboard after seeing the ones Joss and Main had on sale last year!

So pretty! For anyone else still looking Amazon also has great ones.

@Smurfette: yeah DH though this one was a bit feminine, but he knew it was my dream bed and he did like it. I think he will love how it will look all set up.
@fussygal: I know right!!! aghh! they are all soooo lovely. And seriously an amazing price - cheaper than west elm, PB and even ikea! For what seems like great quality. It said they're all made with solid wood.

@Mrs. Pen: YAY!!! I'm SO happy for your!!! That one is so pretty! I looked at it too, but people already comment on how "feminine" our master bedroom is, so I got this one. Ordered it on New Year's and I think we still have a couple of weeks before it gets delivered.

Gorgeous! I love Joss & Main! That site's dangerous. Were you able to resist picking up a few extra things while you were browsing?

@Mrs. Pen: I just saw that and LOVED all their beds. Unfortunately I couldn't find a color that went well with our gray bedding and dark blue walls (either clashed, or would be too much gray or too much blue).
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@ladyfingers: what about white? that would be a great contrast to the darker colors!
@Minnie_Girl: haha yes. I really wanted the ampersand wall decor - but DH said no that's what happens when I buy online when he's home

@Mrs. Pen: Oh dear, a white bed is kind of my nightmare. We have white roman shades behind our bed and from our dog poking her head out of them constantly, they are all stained along the edge. White + our house = no bueno.

This is the bed I've been stalking for almost a year, but I can't bring myself to bite the bullet. Whatever we get, we'd need to take the money out of savings so it feels like a huge commitment! I keep thinking I'll find something better... and I'm not totally convinced this will "go" with the room.

@ladyfingers: oooh that is pretty. I think a solid wood bed would be gorgeous in your room (or so it sounds).

@Mrs. Pen: This is our bedding, with the same shade gray fitted sheet.

This is our wall color:

And our floors are dark wood laminate, almost a cherry color (only photo I have showing floor color attached)

@Mrs. Pen: OK here's our bedroom (do you like how now that you bought a bed I'm totally hijacking your thread to get design input from you?)
The thing I worry about with a "solid" headboard is blocking the windows, but there's nowhere to put a bed other than the windows.
ETA sorry about the window blowout.
