I usually buy them on expedia or some other similar site. Is there anywhere else to check to get a good deal?
How do you get good prices on flights?

I use SkyScanner in the first instance, though often the cheapest option seems to be direct with the airline. Maybe I just don't look in the right places!

I check Kayak and all those other compilation websites. Then I use those results to check out the actual airline's website to make sure it really is the lowest rate because for some reason, the airline itself might be the cheaper option!

I buy directly from the airline, but I stalk prices (that way I notice when there is a significant drop). I've found that the best time to buy (for domestic flights) is 4-6 weeks before you leave, and buy them on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

I check deal sites first then always double check directly on the airline's website. Like @illumina: @Alivoo01: they are almost always cheaper still on their site!

@illumina: @Alivoo01: @lawbee11: @regberadaisy: See why have i never thought of checking the airline directly? Thank you!
@lawbee11: I would wait until 4-6 weeks but we're planning a family trip to Hawaii so I would like to get the flights booked since we have our rental house dates set. I think I will watch the prices for a couple of weeks.

@mrskc: I also set up travelocity farewatcher so when it dips below a certain price I get notified! I think on Travelocity you can look up what the average price for when you want to fly.

Kayak, hands down. They search price and book you directly through the airline. Ive booked both my trips back to the states through them.

@lawbee11: that's impressive info! Do you travel a lot to have discovered that?

I setup a Bing Travel alert if its a route where they support a fare forecast. I also use Kayak.

@illumina: that's when most airlines run their sales! I think it's because it's their slower travel days? Just like tickets are always cheaper to fly mid week.

@illumina: My DH travels about once a month, so I am usually in charge of finding the cheapest flights because I actually enjoy it! The weekend is usually the worst time to book a flight (probably because a majority of people buy their tickets on the weekend!).

@regberadaisy: @lawbee11: that never occured to me! I'll bear that in mind in future! I love looking for flights too... travel agent would be my dream job if it weren't so poorly paid.

@illumina: @lawbee11: I hounded airfare for a year for our HM! We paid ~$640 from JFK-Dublin then Barcelona-JFK!

@mrskc: When I know I will need to book tickets for certain dates, I just make it part of my daily routine to check (like in the morning while I am having my coffee). That way you can see the fluctuations and see when there's been a significant drop.

@regberadaisy: impressive! I don't think I could get from the UK to anywhere in the US for that price!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@illumina: yea, we were backpacking through Europe so I def researched which country was cheaper to fly into and out of. UK is $$$ to fly into!

@lawbee11: the one time I saw JFK-Berlin for $340 RT!! I was soo sad we had no time off left. I can't even fly domestic for that price sometimes!

@regberadaisy: I didn't realise that. Unfortunately I can't do a huge amount about our location, haha. Which countries did you visit? I'd love to do an interrail or maybe driving trip around continental Europe some day.

The UK has a pretty hefty transit tax. If you want to visit London and another place in Europe, you should do it this way:
US -> LHR (stay for a week) -> other Europe destination -> LHR (stay only for < 24 hrs) -> US
If you stay in the UK for a week *after* your Europe destination, it actually costs you more in taxes!

I just read somewhere that you should clear your cookies if you are visiting sites over and over for deals because they get higher if they know your looking... I'm not sure if that is possible OR true, but thought I'd share
