I have a wedding to attend in less than two week and have not found anything to wear yet. I've been looking online and everything is either too plain, expensive or not appropriate for the occasion. TIA!

I love White House Black Market! They usually have some great sale options, too! My other fall back is Nordstroms . . . the best customer service ever!

TJ Max, Marshalls, etc. I don't like to spend a lot on a dress I won't wear often.

J Crew, always on sale, though, so that limits the colors and styles. I usually buy ahead of events, so I always have something to wear, down to the shoes. I currently have 2 floor length dresses that I could pull out and feel great in (hemmed to the correct length).

For fancy dresses that I know I will only wear once or twice I'll go to places like Loehmanns. They usually have a great selection and you can find expensive, designer stuff at discounted prices.

@looch: I buy ahead too! Having a few great options ready to wear makes me feel less anxious about social events . . . for some reason, I feel that much more comfortable in them because they have been with me for a while.

Are there any good resale shops in your area? My go-to is high-end stuff secondhand. I've been able to score dvf, Marc Jacobs, the like for $100 or less.

The last two party dresses I got were purchased on clearance at local boutiques. I can only fit into strapless dresses since I am much bigger on bottom than I am on top, so I just find whatever strapless dress is on clearance and get it altered to fit me.

@MsLipGloss: Same here, White House Black Market & Nordstrom have great options. JCrew also has some nice classic dresses.
Like @looch, buying ahead & having a closet with options for all occasions really helps take the stress out of dressing for events. I've bought some when they were on sale without having somewhere to wear them just so I have a variety & don't have to scramble for something. My sister also borrows occasionally so they get put to good use.

@LMOG47: @MsLipGloss: I hate to admit this, but in my case, I learned from experience that waiting until you have an event means you often pay full price and I hate that with a passion of 1000 burning suns. As I've gotten older I make sure I always have a wardrobe that addresses all the life events that happen, job interviews, festive and solemn events.

Rent the Runway! I've ordered dresses from there several times and have been happy every time - you can rent great designer dresses for much less than purchasing a new dress. I found that I only wear formal dresses that I buy a few times, so this is much more economical.

I got one great wedding go-to dress at Target. $20 baby!
My other I got at Ann Taylor and I have an old one that I wear a lot from Nordstroms.

@looch: Amen to that! With the exception of certain pieces, nothing ticks me off more than shelling out full price, especially when in just a couple weeks it'll be on sale.

I'm cheap so I stick with The Limited, White House Black Market, Kohl's, Target, & NY & Co.

jcp.com (JcPenney's). I've gotten some cute dresses on there for weddings. The American Living line has some great dresses.
