My boss has one in Aruba and she loves it.
I don't know if I've been enough places to choose. I really want to visit a lot of Caribbean islands, I haven't been down there at all.
I've been to New Zealand and LOVED IT but it would be too expensive to fly there for a timeshare over and over again.
ETA: we would likely get one in NY, just because we already go there a lot for family. It'd be fun to have a place near Montauk or Fire Island.
Where would you buy a time share?

i wouldn't! my parents have timeshare points we can use all over the world, but honestly, it's a PITA to use them. we did use them for our trip to vegas, but it was a headache. we still have more we can use, but it's daunting to plan a trip with them

@mrs. bird: that's a shame! It all sound super confusing to me listen to my boss try to explain it. I'm not sure we'd ever do it... but it's an interesting idea!
One family I nannied for instead bought a second house in florida that they now visit a few times a year.

@MrsH: Yes! Disney's Vacation Club-- most are at Walt Disney World in Florida, but they also have one at Disneyland, the Aulani in Hawaii, and Hilton Head.
We have timeshare points and don't own at a specific resort. It seemed like a good deal when my mom bought into it 15 years ago, but with the increase in maintenance dues (we pay around $600 a year!), it's not even really worth it.

@Mrs. Pen: oh, i'm all about vacation homes! i have worked for a couple very generous families who let me use theirs 
we don't have a vacation home (or a home, ugh), but my nana lived on the cape (i have a lot of family on the cape) and now her house isn't occupied, so that kind acts as a vacation house until they decide what to do with it which is nice

My dad has one in South Africa but has never even been there... He just uses it to trade all over , including disney! Much less expensive than buying one in the states

Same answer as @mrs. bird: and @hotchildinthecity: I wouldn't!! They seem so scammy to me. My cousin bough one in my hometown so that he could come ski every year, but it wound up being a giant hassle, so he bought a condo instead. Every time I see him he complains about how he's never going to be able to get rid of the damn timeshare!
I'd much rather own a vacation home and then rent it out through AirBnB or VRBO when we aren't using it.
Obviously, this is all in a fantasy world since we are nowhere near even owning a primary home, haha.

I wouldn't either. I like going new places a lot! If I ever get to the point where I'm taking multiple vacations per year I guess I might want a beach house, but at that point I think I'd rather buy one and rent it out when I'm not using it.

Ils have a timeshare 'global' and it's a huge pita.
Dh wants to buy a vaca home in st thomas or one of the other virg islands!

I wouldn't! DH's parents have one and they totally regret it. It's a huge hassle to try and use it, let other people use it, can only use during certain times, etc. They want to get rid of it, but that's proving to be really complicated, too!
I'd rather just rent through sites like VRBO and airbnb so I could go wherever I want, at a time of my choosing!

I wouldn't. I prefer buying real estate. We are going to get a condo or house in Hilton head in a few years.

We have one that's point based, so you can stay wherever. Honestly, though, it's annoying and not worth the money. DH bought it before I knew him.

Personally, I would not. However, my parents have a few and they have worked out surprisingly well for our family. They are all within driving distance from our home, they are on good weeks (one is Memorial Day, one is Labor Day), and they are in popular locations. Because of that, they are pretty easy for us to use, but also easy to trade or rent out. We have stayed in nice places all over the country using "trades" for our timeshares.

I think the only one that would make sense for us would be Whistler, but I probably wouldn't because they all seem like they wouldn't save us any money.
