I've looked online at nordstroms And Bloomingdales. Where else should I look?

I'd rent something! Or check out a few flash sales like Gilt
Also a brick and mortar Macy's after prom! Sometimes they have just simple black dresses

You are in the Boston area, right? I like Lord and Taylor (I've had good luck with the one on Boylston) and Nordstrom's, if you want to look in person.
I've never done Rent the Runway but people I know who have always look great, so I'd be tempted to try that!

I third Rent the Runway! With everyone taking pictures and posting them online. It barely pays to invest in a high profile dress. It's so hard to wear again.

I bought one on sale from BHLDN this spring. I also found a Vera Wang at a TJMaxx once, though that store had a separate designer section.
