i've been wanting one. right now it's just on a metal frame and box spring but our cat likes hiding under it. it also fits perfectly into a nook in our bedroom so we can't get a headboard (it would block a window). would love to get a frame though, and i'd like it to be open underneath so our cat can hide there!

Upholstered bed (including headboard), we got it at bob's but it's available in a bunch of different furniture stores. Wayfair and Joss and Main always have a good selection! I vote no to storage because I find under bed (and under crib) storage gets really dusty! I'd rather use plastic tubs that seal well. Drawers just get dusty.

@Mrs. Bee: our mattress is just on our box springs that sit on the floor... it would be nice to elevate it and have that open space at the bottom for storage. i'd love to have a headboard to lean back against and do some nightly reading. plus, i think it'll make everything look nicer too!
@mrs. wagon: glad you brought that up! that's exactly why i asked the question - i wonder if i'll really use the underbed storage if we got it. non-storage beds are cheaper too, which is always a plus.
@MamaChin: @mrs. wagon: do upholstered beds get dustier or require more maintenance than non-upholstered beds? what made you go with that one? aesthetics?

We have an upholstered bed frame and headboard we got from Joss and Main for a great price. My only complaint is that the frame extends so low to the ground that there is no option for storage underneath and I wish there was.

@Mrs. High Heels: definitely aesthetics, but I don't see the bed getting any dustier than my old wooden headboard bed. I actually used to have to dust the old bed weekly because a thick layer of dust would accumulate, but this bed kinda hides the dust too well.. I should probably try to vacuum it soon!

@Mrs. High Heels: ours is like a velvet type of fabric, I don't really think it gets that dirty? I run a dryer sheet over it once in a while, that's as far as maintenance goes. Under the bed gets super dusty though so we have to lift it and vacuum about once every two weeks. And yes, we chose it based on looks and price, but I do not regret our choice. It makes us feel like grown ups haha.

We have a wooden slanted back headboard and frame. The frame sits high enough off the ground to store plastic bins under there, which is nice, and I just prefer the look of legs lifting it off the ground. We also have a base (like a box spring but it's a tempurpedic so it's just solid) that has drawers in it. The problem is the wooden bed frame comes up higher than the drawers so it's almost impossible to access them.
I like the look of upholstered as well but Dh doesn't so wood for us.

We don't have one in the master, and it sort of bugs me.
In the guest room, we have my great great great great grandmother's bed. I slept in it growing up and LOVE it.
But I think I've been spoiled by having antiques as a kid so now I'm too picky to pick out anything new for DH and I.

Ours is from a local store, it's a rod iron sleigh bed. I love it, but I really want a upholstered headboard. I big plush white one...sigh probably not going to happen. It took a lot of convincing for DH to get the one we have now since it was pretty pricy.

We have an iron headboard from Room and Board, no storage. We have lots of things under the bed though.

We built our own bed. But I prefer non upholstered no storage for dust reasons. You can easily wipe dust off wood or metal, but I feel like fabric would just get nasty with all the dust.

Fabric from West Elm. Love it!! It was just the headboard. We have a cheap frame that came with the mattress. Then got a bedskirt.

Upholstered from Bernhardt. The bed has a large base so nothing is under it except wayward socks.

We got it on discount at a furniture overstock place but it's a Pottery Barn frame. All solid wood no storage.

We don't have one. We have just a frame right now and I hate it. Oh well, one of these days we'll upgrade!

Wood headboard, frame, and footboard from Bassett Furniture. Super easy to dust/clean. Doesn't have storage.

@Smurfette: I was just looking at West Elm's headboards yesterday - looks so nice and plush! I like their simple black bedframe too, it seems lower footprint than many others.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Oh those darn wayward socks! I have a bag in my closet just for singleton socks, so every time I find another singleton I'll check there, and sometimes I find a match!
@mamabear57: @Mrs. Pen: I just discovered Joss & Main the other day because I saw a banner ad they had on yelp. Can't believe I never heard of it before - I must've been living under a rock.
@Dandelion: Nice!! I love a great deal on quality stuff.
@coopsmama: Same! It would be really nice to have a more put together bedroom. I'm slowly going to make it happen - I want to paint our walls too! I'm so ready for a change.
@PurplePumps: I'm leaning towards no upholstery now because I can imagine dust mites collecting in there, but they do look really nice and comfy!
Thanks for the feedback, everyone! This was helpful!

Crate and barrel wood frame. We have the option for storage or no storage depending on where we set the frame. Currently we need the space so I store clothes under there. I love it!

Pottery Barn wood frame/no storage. Between that and our mattress and box spring, it was a big splurge, but we love it.

@Sparkler: I'm going to take my sweet time to look for bedframes because I want to get one we'll love and have forever! I think it's worth the splurge if it's long lasting, quality, and you love it!!
@Mrs Spoon: I was just looking at some crate and barrel frames yesterday, they are nice!

@Mrs. High Heels: That was my husband's justification too. We have the Ashby king, which is stupid expensive but truly beautiful. He thought the upholstered headboard would have to replaced in 5 years, so we opted to just get a "forever" bed and be done with it. We also got the matching nightstands.

@Sparkler: Is it the Ashby Sleigh one? That is a GORGEOUS bed!! I love it!! Be proud, it's seriously a keeper! That's a good point about the possibility of having to replace an upholstered headboard.

We actually bought our upholstered headboard from target! I was a little nervous, but I love it and get tons of compliments on it.

@Mrs. High Heels: It is! I didn't want to spend that much, but after seeing it in the store, we swooned. We both have antique dressers we inherited from relatives and it works well to tie everything together. We honestly looked for something cheaper for a year before we bit the bullet. No regrets!

We have a four poster bed from Crate & Barrel, no storage underneath, too dusty!!

After years and years of not having a real bed (just mattress and frame) we got grow up furniture at Pottery Barn. Behold the Farmhouse bed! We love it because it's simple and classic. We were debating about an upholstered headboard but I was worried it would be hard to keep clean.

Solid wood platform with suede headboard from Charles P. Rogers. They have a showroom in Chelsea I think, and a warehouse in NJ. Love their selection.

We have an upholstered/no storage from Joss and Main. I love having the upholstered because I like to read in bed. DH used to shove things under the bed for "storage", but the truth is, he'd never remember anything that was under there and it was such a mess. I like no storage underneath. Unless, maybe drawers, but I don't like the look of those.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Ginabean3: I was eyeing this one! I waver between this vs the sleigh headboards where there's an arch for when you want to lean/prop back and read. I do like how this headboard is straight up and down so you can push the entire frame right up against the wall, and that it has a lower footprint. I'm obviously overthinking this! We've never had a bed frame, so I want to make sure we get one we love and will last forever with absolutely no regrets.
@shopaholic: I like to read in bed too! We have these huge square pillows that I currently use to prop myself up when I want to sit and read. Or I just read laying down.

Wood panel headboard from a furniture place. No storage because we have an adjustable bed.
This is the headboard we got. We got it from a furniture warehouse and we got a amazing deal from the price listed here.
