Looking for input here...with LO#2 on the way we'll be in the market for a 3 row SUV. I currently drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee and LOVE it - but since they dont have a 3 row option I'll be driving a non Jeep for the first time in forever!!!

We loved our XC90 util #2 came along. Just not enough room for the diaper bag and baby stuff in the back seat. The third row was impossible to get to with the car seats installed.
We went to a minivan because we couldn't really find any other SUV with better gas mileage.

We have a Toyota Sequoia. It's a massive SUV, but super comfy and roomy. It's the designated road trip car. We packed 6 adults and a baby in there for a road trip and everyone was super comfy. I love it!!

We have an Acadia and I love the space. However, we want a 3rd child and DH is already looking for something bigger like a suburban or Yukon XL.

I just was looking at the redesigned 2016 Honda Pilot and it's basically a mini van. I would check it out, seems like a great price too!

Acura MDX. We really like it! Not a ton of trunk space with the 3rd row up, and the 3rd row is really best for kids or short adults.

@Sparkler: Wow, thanks so much for sharing that. We are also looking for a new car, and I love this idea!

We looooooooved our Mazda CX-9!!! I finally traded it in to go over to the dark side (minivannn) and I miss it so much.

@Sparkler: oh, cool!! I have a 2013 CRV so I'm a ways away from upgrading but I have heard rumors of the pilot being redesigned. I did not like what the old Pilot looked like. Very cool. I am hoping to keep my CRV for a little while because I love it now. But good to know the pilot was redesigned.

We have a Tahoe, but even though it's HUGE, there's so little trunk space when the third row is up. It would be a huge PITA to try to put a kid back there, but would be ok for adults or older kids to ride in. Also, gas mileage is horrible, so we end up driving my Mazda 6 everywhere anyway. DH really wanted a Tahoe cuz we "need the space" for travelling and whatnot... but we almost never use it.

@mrs. wagon: omg you're a minivan mom now?! Haha
I have an Audi Q7 and I love it! We don't use the 3rd row often, but love that we can latch 2 seats back there was fun driving 4 kids around a couple months ago!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@chopsuey: I know!! I resisted for 6 years but finally gave in after 2 bad incidents with the swinging open doors in one day. sliding doors! and so much space... I'm a convert!!!

@Mamasig: This is high on my list to look at as I get GM employee pricing.
@Sparkler: I looked at this too and the pricing to me seems high bc the other two car companies I have been looking at I get steep discounts from! But still worth a test drive. I wonder how it performs in the winter?
@hilsy85: This is my biggest concern...I dont want a non existent trunk with a third row. I at least want to fit a grocery trip/costco trip back there!
@mrs. wagon: haha - dark side! Thats kind of how I feel right now about them!
@kiddosc: I'm terrified of the Tahoe and Yukon bc of their size! I seriously question if they would fit in my garage!
@chopsuey: I need to price these - I get a decent audi discount bit still not sure it will bring it to my price range. I do looooooove them though!
@agold: I was SOOOOO excited to see their improved gas mileage...makes me so happy it can actually be an option! I will definitely be checking it out...do you like it? Everyone I know has the citadel which is not reality for us - so I am anxious to hear other opinions!

@mrs. wagon: Did you get the Mazda5 or a different van? How do you like it?
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@avivoca: I wanted the Mazda 5 but they're discontinuing it, so there were no lease programs (we wanted to lease, not buy, to try out a van). So it was actually a smaller monthly payment to get a Honda Odyssey, which I originally thought was way too much car for us... but now I'm hooked!!!!

@Mrs D: My husband and I actually did like the Durango. But we felt it was too much of a family car for us at this point (we are still trying to get pregnant). It felt like a minivan to me. But clearly it doesn't totally look like a minivan. It was sporty enough that my husband was really interested in it, until I told him it felt like a minivan! Do go check it out.

Following! We'll be in the market soon for a new 3 row SUV. I currently drive a Tahoe, and it's been great (and it's paid off), but it got hit by lightening about 2 years ago, and it's never been the same. It's slowly showing it's ass more and more. My husband hates the new Tahoes, and really wants a Sequoia for the rear passenger leg room. I hate that there's no legroom for the front seat passenger in my Tahoe when my son is in his carseat behind.
I'm also looking at the Lexus GX and Audi Q7, but I'm unsure about moving into a "luxury" vehicle.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@mrs. wagon: Crap! That's the one I wanted! Well, I guess I should make my case to my husband for trading in our Versa. I don't think we need to go full mini-van, but I'd love to have sliding doors when hauling a toddler in and out of the car.

We have an Acadia, and it's nice and spacious, I like the style/layout but I want something else just not sure what! ideally a Tahoe, but DH thinks it's too big.

We just got a new 2016 Audi Q7 - not sure when that is launched in the US though. But maybe with the new model coming you can get a good deal on a 2015 model?
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
Acura MDX! My mom refused to drive a minivan and that car is going on like 15+ yrs or something like that! Survived long road trips, harsh winters, everything!
pomegranate / 3032 posts
@avivoca: The mazda5 was our rental when my car was being fixed after an accident (we had it for 4 weeks) I loved it! only downfall for us is that I really want an AWD/4WD car for the winter.

I have a 2015 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with the optional 2 seat 3rd row and I love it! The 3rd row seats fold flat and pop up easy. It was the last thing we bought for the baby, I was 39 weeks pregnant, but prior to that we both had Honda fits, and the tree of us wouldn't have been able to go home from the hospital in a car that small in the middle of winter!

We've had our new 2016 Ford Explorer for about 1.5 months so far and I am loving it! It feels very roomy without feeling like a massive vehicle. And it has lots of nice creature comforts as well which doesn't hurt!

I just got the 2016 honda pilot and love it! I didn't get the captains seat second row, but that is an option. I have a two year old and baby on the way in January. I don't foresee us using the third row much, but imagine with two car seats it may be annoying to get into the third row without the captains chairs. We just used the third row on a family vacation and it was great! Very spacious ( I sat in the back with my brother who is over 6 feet and we had plenty of room to spare. What sold me is the trunk space. I had a Nissan rogue and there was barely any room when we had the stroller in the back. I love the way it drives, doesn't feel too big. I didn't like how boxy the old pilot was and this one looks much nicer. I definitely recommend it!

We had the 2015 pilot and recently got the qx56 instead. We liked the space the qx had to offer! It's very roomy and I'm happy with it. Our next vehicle will probably be the Yukon XL to really get a trunk space, but the qx fits a double stroller with the third row up and that's what we were looking for!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@Mrs D: just curious, why do you want a 3rd for a 2nd baby? So you can drive other people beside baby? We have a midsize SUV, no 3rd row, and I think it will be fine for the two kids but putting an extra person is very very tight (we did fit 2 Chico next fit seats and a small but pregnant adult in the back, but barely).
We looked at an Acura MDX and I felt that the second row was a little too small, even though the third row would be convenient sometimes.

We have a 2013 Honda Pilot and love it. We have 2 car seats in the 2nd row and can comfortably seat an adult in the 2nd row too. We have only used the 3rd row a few times but we just find it to be spacious without feeling too big. It also drives really well.

We have a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder and I love it. The trunk space is awesome, but it doesn't feel like you are driving a huge vehicle. It came included with a lot of nice extras. We don't use the 3rd row often but it's a nice option to have. Plus when it's folded down we can fit a ton of stuff in the back!
pomegranate / 3565 posts
@Foodnerd81: we have two and we like the third row because my mom rides with us a lot. plus we found them to be more spacious.
@Mrs D: with the 3rd row up there isn't a ton of space in the Acadia. Not enough for a SAMs trip for us. Basically only the double stroller and nothing more.

I'll put in a plug for keeping your grand Cherokee that's what I have. We have #2 coming next month & I can fit a foonf convertible behind driver, a cybex Aton in center & have a full-size seat for an adult available behind passenger. Also a note on the pathfinder- we looked at it last year & it's super nice but the transmission that was in it is not built for a car that size & there have been a ton of problems. You could move up to the armada & avoid the transmission issue but it's a v8 so worse gas mileage.

I am eyeing the Lincoln MKT for end of year! We have two kids and maybe maybe maybe want one more? Probably not. Lol anyway it was the roomiest midsize suv w third row option and the options beyond that were exactly what I wanted! Stadium seating in third row electroni trunk bucket seat second row etc
papaya / 10560 posts
I don't have one, but hopefully will get one soon--the 2016 honda pilot is amazing!!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@Mamasig: yeah that makes sense, thanks. We figured the number of times we carry other people around didn't warrant the bigger car, but I do hope we don't regret it after the new baby is here.
grapefruit / 4584 posts
We have an Acura MDX but don't use the third row...its wider than a lot of similar size SUVs and there is soooo much space between the two car seats (maxi cosi, one RF and one FF) in the second row. The extra width makes it a PITA to street park though, if you're in a city, but we deal.

@Mrs.KMM: My sister has an explorer through work and it seems SO nice. I wish I had access to employee pricing - if I did it would be at the top of my list.
@Foodnerd81: So its more about space than anything. I know we will likely not use the third row for seating - but more for storage. So 1) I'd like to buy this next car 2) we may or may not have #3 someday so I dont want to invest in something that may be too small some day 3) we are starting to road trip more and when you have 2 LOs, a husband who takes his golf clubs everywhere and a dog - my Grand Cherokee gets small quick! Plus - with 2 kids in my Jeep I feel I will only have room for one other passenger - I'd like to at least have options.
@Charm54: Forgot about the pathfinder...looking it up now!
@kge: I know...I LOOOOOVE my jeep so much. I have been a Jeep girl for so many years - I wish they still made the commander. Honestly - I think few cars compare in terms of investment to the Grand Cherokees. DH will finish the rest of my lease out - so I'll still have it some times. And I will definitely go back to it after this big SUV.
@mrsjyw: I didnt know Lincoln made a 3rd row. Again - it drives me bonkers I cant find a way to weasle into Ford family pricing!
@PinkElephant: Not in the city but we already feel tight in our garage...so that may be a challenge!
Thanks for all the input ladies...I am loving it!!!

@Mrs D: We have a Buick Enclave and I love it!!!! Its been an awesome car! If you get GM pricing then go for the Acadia as its practically the same car!

I have discovered that my discount on Ford is better than I thought...so the explorer is definitely a strong contender now! I LOVE the MKT @mrsjyw: but that may be a touch out of our price range this time!
I'm checking out my audi pricing now. I love working for an automotive supplier and having discounts available. Takes the stress out of haggling with car dealers...
