Help me settle a debate, which order do you usually do these chores: dust vs vacuum? Do you usually dust then vacuum or vacuum then dust?
I was listening to a podcast this morning and they do the same order I do, but curious what others do.

Dust then vacuum. My thought is that dust (and other cleaning) will result in more mess on the floor, so I do floors last.

Theoretically, dust then vacuum....I'm wondering what the reasoning would be for the opposite.

Top to Bottom.
But honestly with kids, whatever I can get to.

I could see why you would do it opposite, like vacuum then dust because as I was vacuuming the other day I could see dust and cat hair flying everywhere in the sunlight. I dont do these tasks on the same day though, so I guess I can't really answer.

@808love: I'm guessing some people dust second because the vacuum can create more dust? But if you have a good vacuum, that shouldn't be an issue.

TBH I usually dust with my vacuum. I use the hose and the brush attachment and dust while I vacuum.

@newlypregnantlady: Same. I never ever dust other than using the vacuum.

@newlypregnantlady: @petitenoisette: They need to make an attachment specifically for dusting because that's so smart!

Sometimes I dust second, but I use the magnetic cloth dusters so I don't feel like the dust goes flying anywhere.

Dust then vacuum...but I dust (formally) much lest frequently than I vacuum.

dust is always first....it goes to floor than vacuumed up!

It's dust then vacuum for me, but growing up my Mom was a vacuum first person. She thought the vacuum kicked up too much dust, but I always thought dusting pushed too much on the floor.

@Boogs: what would would be awesome is an attachment that would work great to vacuum the dust off of ceiling fan blades. I hate dusting those because I feel like I get covered in dust.
Or the tops of bookshelves would be great!

What ever I have time for! Never had a particular theory on this and frankly can't remember the last time I did both on the same day.
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
@newlypregnantlady: That would be!
I'm a dust, then vacuum person. I vacuum way more than I dust, but always vacuum right after dusting.

Dust then vacuum. Or sometimes I do suck up some dust with the vacuum attachment.

@travellingbee: this!
Man I was starting to think there was something wrong with me!
Dusting and vacuuming gets done if and when I can coerce DD and DH to do it. Respectively.

I was taught all chores are "top down"
so dust, then vacuum. Clean bathroom counters, then toilets, then floors, etc. Floors are always last in case you get them dirty while cleaning other things.

Well, I guess I'm the only one that was taught vacuum then dust. Probably because back in the day with the bagged vacuums, dust came out as you were vacuuming and settled, so we always dusted last. I have a Dyson now, but my cleaning comes in stages these days anyway lol

@JennyLayneAZ: I actually still have bags in my vacuum and I wouldn't have it any other way! We don't get any dust from it either.

@Boogs: I think the technology has come a long way from when I was a kid though lol back then they leaked pretty bad! Maybe I'm aging myself here

Growing up we were forced to vacuum first, the logic (of that parent) being that vacuuming kicks up dust, so you dust after.
Eta: none of my dust goes to the floor... I use a slightly damp surface (on a cloth).
