I want to buy Charlie a dollhouse for his third birthday. I haven't done extensive research, but these are the two that I'm looking at:

I've never had a dollhouse. Is there anything I should be looking for?

Are you looking for a finished product? When I was researching for DD, I found that we could buy a lot more house for a much cheaper price if we went with a kit, instead of a finished house. They're expensive!
Anyway, I searched a lot and found that Melissa and Doug dollhouse kits have great reviews, are easy to put together, and less money. Here's the one we went with:
It's HUGE, and it probably took my husband about 10-12 hours total to put it together (we still need to paint, and he wants to do some special finishes in the rooms, but I don't think that's necessary).

It looks like the Sensational one is discontinued? But out of the two, I like the Hape. It's appears more open with space for more than one kid to play from both sides and the colors are really cute!
I think you'd want to find something that fits your space, will get good use and isn't too fragile haha. We had one and wrecked it 
It was too fancy and delicate!

I don't know much about doll houses but if I were to get one I would probably get the Hape one between the two. My husband's nieces have something similar and it's so cute and very gender neutral. If his youngest niece is willing to part from it I want it for myself! LOL! I've never had a dollhouse either.

@Honeybee: those are beautiful, but i really don't want to put that much work into it. that's what i envision when i think of a dollhouse. the whole front facade, and then rooms in that layout in the back. i like that better than the two i linked to, but i don't want to spend hours on it!

PS totally love that you're getting Charlie a dollhouse. Props to Mrbee - I don't think DH would go for that. I hope he lets me get DS a kitchen at least

Yeah, luckily DH was looking for a project. 
I found that some manufacturers will assemble the kit for you, but we're too cheap to pay for that, so we DH assembled our kit for us:

@Coco Bee: i don't think of dollhouses as a girl toy. playing house is very gender neutral and fantastic imaginative play!

@Mrs. Bee: I don't *want* to think of it as a girls toy; but I feel like I do because of the culture/society/way I was raised. DH is very into "he'll have boy toys" and has an ego about it... so that's why I think he would protest.
