DH and I have had really good luck with the Toshiba Satellite range. We both have them and both are several years old.

I just ordered this one for my husband after spending an afternoon getting recommendations from the tech guys at Frys:

I think the build quality on Thinkpads are great. Particularly the X series. However, they are very expensive. I have had Thinkpads for years and they are great.
We also have Dells and the build quality isn't as good but the price point is so much more affordable. The XPS line is really great. The Inspiron line is fine but the quality does feel more flimsy. It is much cheaper though! I've owned both.

So I just got a Lenovo and I LOVE IT! Previously I had a Toshiba, which I also liked.
My DH is pretty good at techy stuff and we have a friend who is in IT for a living and he said that Toshiba and Lenovo are the two PC brands that have the least amount of "problems," generally speaking.
We got ours at Costco when it was on coupon for $75 off.

@loveisstrange: @Bao: my toshiba just died after just 3 years. I loved that laptop...to death apparently lol.

I really like my Lenovo Yoga. My office got it for me in December. It's so light and airy. (My previous work laptop was a brick.)

What do you use this computer for?
Brand wise, ThinkPads are great. I also am partial to Acer myself. It all depends on specs in the end though!

Bumping! I'm also looking for a new laptop and all your responses got me curious about a Lenovo. I checked out an Ideapad today and it was pretty nice (and on sale too)! The one I was looking at was a touchscreen, which seems to work better with Windows 8. But I haven't decided yet.

@mrbee: Which one did you end up buying?
I'm about to head out to the stores again for some serious sale hunting (which I never do).

@SugarplumsMom: We actually realized we could revive an old tower PC we hadn't been using and did that instead! We still would love a laptop but haven't figured out which one to get...

@mrbee: I'm going nuts trying to narrow down my options. I've been needing a new laptop for months (maybe even a year+)! At first, I thought a tablet would suffice my needs, but I realized I just need a real laptop.
I really liked the feel of the Lenovo Ideapad. The build quality was sexy. The keyboard was very similar to a Macbook. But it was the last one left (display model).
