If your last name is what I think it is, he would have the same name as one of my favorite authors.

John Henry is an American legendary figure: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Henry_%28folklore%29
Here's the Disney retelling:
I prefer Henry John for that reason. Plus, my parents called me by my middle name, and as an adult it's always causing unnecessary confusion when it comes to bank statements, doctor's appointments, etc.

If you want to call him Henry, name him Henry John. My parents gave me an unnecessarily complicated name and it has been a bit of a nightmare.

@loki: @skadi:
thanks, I was hoping to hear from someone with first hand experience.
I guess I'm just hung up on the fact that I think John Henry flows better then Henry John!

@Cupcake: I think Henry John flows really nicely! And how often will he really be saying Henry John? He'll be saying Henry Mi**er
and it sounds amazing!

@loki: true. I get warm fuzzies when I hear Henry Mi**er. One of my coworkers said we're starting our own royal family. DS1's name is Char*es. LOL!

@Cupcake: I would go with what you want to call him, so Henry John. It's rare that he will be saying his first middle, but he would very frequently have to correct things if he goes by his middle name.

DH's goes by his middle name and he hates that it isn't just his first name.

Another vote for Henry as first name if that's what you intend to call him. My DH goes by his middle name and I think it's a pain.

For me I chose Henry John because John Henry is a huge plumbing company that has vans all of town, so that's all I think of when I hear that name.

I totally agree that it will be easier on the kiddo to call him by his first name, so my vote is Henry John! I think it flows nicely. John Henry does too, but once you've picked the name you won't compare it to alternatives any more so don't worry about that

I like Henry John the best. I think if you just say first and middle John Henry sounds better but when you say first, middle, last they both sound equally as nice.

I agree that it's confusing when people go by their middle names. I'd go with Henry as the first name.

I like John Henry! I actually feel like John is becoming less popular but it's still so classic. You can call him Henry or Johnny f you want to be really 50s!
nectarine / 2973 posts
I would make his first name what you intend to call him by. I like Henry John, it sounds very classic!

Henry is such a cooler name than John. I'd use that as his first name.

It wont be often that you use all 3 names together. I would most definitely use the first name that you intend to call him!

One of my great uncles as John Henry so the other way sounds weird to me.

If it were a double first name, I would say that Henry John sounds super awkward. But as a first and middle name, it works!

I think John Henry flows better, but I much prefer Henry as the first name so I vote Henry John.

I like John Henry-- better flow. Also, Henry John (if you're using as a double first name) initials/nickname would be HJ.
grapefruit / 4441 posts
While I agree that John Henry might have a better flow, I much prefer Henry John if you want him to go by Henry. Also, I can't get the legendary John Henry out of my mind.
What about Henry Johnathan?

I love the flow of John Henry but think you should name him whatever you intend on calling him.

Yep, I have a friend who's childs middle name is actually their first name. Nightmare. I do like them both though

LO and I listen to a lot of old folk songs, and this one comes on a lot...
I think I prefer Henry John because of this.

I voted for John Henry because I think it flows better and I also have a weird thing about initials flowing together. I like JHM better than HJM because I feel the J in the middle creates a strange empty space...I guess that's the graphic designer in me.
I really wanted to vote for cake though for what it's worth...

I voted Henry John! Because of the song @JessKas: posted!

I would say the first name should be whatever you plan to call him... With that said, I have a friend that have a Henry John and another friend with a John Henry! Total random.

I like Henry John, it has a nice flow to it. I also like H as a first name because the calligraphy for H looks so nice. It's a fancy looking letter!

I think John Henry flows better. I heard it was common in some parts to use your middle name instead of your first.

I like Henry John because you want to call him Henry. I have a lot of students this year who go by their preferred middle name, but on all their official documents (ids, paperwork, class rosters, grade books) it lists their "real" name. It causes a lot of confusion/miscommunication on our end, which leads to frustration on theirs.
apricot / 495 posts
@makemake: I think this is my problem. I refer to DS1 as his first and middle name ALL THE TIME.
@reyorra: I thought about the initals as well BUT if we're talking monogram it would be HMJ.
@Kimberlybee: I like your thinking.
So the reason why I like Henry is because it's similar to my Maiden name, and John because it's both of our paternal grandfather's names. We're big on family names (DS1's first name is after DH's father's first name, and his middle name is My father's first name.)

Henry John. I have a cousin whose parents call him by his middle name and he was always asking them why they didn't just make that his first name if it's what they intended to call him (it was a family name thing.) He ended up changing it once he turned 18 because he was so sick of correcting teachers/professors and having confusion in general about how his name showed up on legal documents/work e-mails/class rosters versus what he actually went by.
