I have had both in my life. I like a 3rd floor for being closer to my bedroom as an adult. As a kid, I loved the freedom of a basement. I'd prefer a basement right now b/c you can immediately access it from the main floor. A third floor you have to trudge up 2 flights to get to.

We've always had basements... So I vote basement! I feel like it's more versatile of a space than a 3rd floor.

Third floor...I don't like the "underground" aspect of a basement...unless it was a walkout.

A 3rd floor is just a large hot space, a basement provides a cooler area in the summer and decent insulation in winter

I say third floor mainly because I like my living area to be level with the ground if that makes sense. So when my kids are outside playing, I can easily see them from the kitchen or living room of the house. Also, I like the idea of having a deck off the main living space that doesn't have a lot of steps to get to the ground.

I've never had either as an adult! I guess it would depend on what you put in those spaces, but I'm inclined to say 3rd floor as basement seems dark and scary.

Basement! But living in California there aren't a lot of basements.

I think I'd slightly prefer a basement. Mostly bc it sounds like a nice cool space in the summer whereas a third floor seems like it would get so hot and be difficult to keep cool in the warmer months. I wouldn't want that much separation from the main floor either

No no no basement! I refuse to have a basement unless it is a walkout apartment renovation. I have no interest in having one! Very negative association.

Basement. Largely for storage, a work area, and open play space that I don't care about being messy. I'd feel like I'd need a 3rd floor to be incorporated into the house and be decorated & orderly.

I've always had basements but I voted 3rd floor. As a new homeowner, we've had so flooding issues with our basement and I'd just rather not!

basement. in CA, i don't think i know anyone with one! we looked at 3 story town homes pre-kids and i didn't like it then and would HATE it now.

@youboots: haha my old brownstone apartment had a guest bedroom in the windowless basement. My parents/in laws didn't like it, but our same-age guests thought it was an awesome place for sleeping in (so dark!)

I chose a basement. We do have one but it's not huge so even when we finish it, it won't be that exciting but it'll be nice to have. My parents have a basement and a third floor and they use their third floor more!

Basement! We would love one, but they are so uncommon in our area.
