My lo was crying at pickup today (because she didn't want to go home!) and I happened to notice her tonsils were a little inflamed but pretty covered in white spots. She said her throat didn't hurt and has not had a fever. Should I be concerned at all? She hasn't really been coughy. Probably a virus? Any reason to see the pediatrician?

i would call the nurse just to check, but that's good that there is no fever.

Could be strep - my nephew's tonsils were white with strep, even when he didn't have a fever. I would get her checked out!

@tinyperson: oh no! That was my first thought but I always have a fever with strep. Her little daycare friend has sounded croupy this week. She probably caught something from her

@Skadi: it could be! My husband gets those but I've never noticed them before and they don't look hard just splotchy.

@yellowbird: white patches can also be thrush. I got it as an adult from my steroid asthma inhaler.

I used to get strep throat a lot as a kid. I always had the white splotches on my tonsils. Now, when I get a sore throat, that's the first thing I look for. I really wish my doctor would have gone through with the plan to have my tonsils out while I was younger.

@macintosh: I don't think it's thrush at all. I feel like I would definitely be able to identify that. It's only on her tonsils and nowhere else.

I once broke out in sulfur type bacteria spots on my tonsils. It was nasty

@yellowbird: Those white spots sound strep-y to me too! (I just had it last week.) The doctor has a rapid strip test for strep that can detect it in just a few minutes... sounds worth testing for, or just bringing her in for a quick visit in general! If she has strep, then antibiotics knocks it out pretty quickly...

My first thought from your description is strep too. Wouldn't hurt to have a doctor run a rapid test for it.
