Just curious for the tax expert bees out there. Who should claim LO?
The person with the higher income? or the lower income? Or some other way to decide?
Does it matter?

@cmomma17: Married? Are you filing return married filing joint? Or is this the case of divorce? If divorce, it is normally provided in the divorce agreement.

I have no idea. Our tax forms changed this year and I'm still confused over the whole thing.

@littlek: sorry! I meant married. We do married filing joint. Would the answer be different for married filing sep? (total tax dummy here, just trying to learn)

@cmomma17: If you are married filing joint, you only have 1 return, so it would show up on your combined return, you don't need to decide who "gets" LO. If you were unmarried, the person who provides the majority of the support could claim "head of household".

What is best if you are single filing seperately?
FI claimed LO last year...we're about to start for this year?

@wheres_c: I would have the higher earner elect the head of household status and claim LO. The other would file single. Please double check head of household and confirm that you/DH qualify for that status their is section explaining what "unmaried" means.

If you are filing jointly, then there is only 1 return, so really both of you claim LO
