Since we live far away from our families, i was thinking of doing family portraits. It would be nice for the grandparents to have something with LO. I want to have our siblings in the photo, but do you think it's an insult if i don't ask my BIL's fiancee to be in the photo?

Could you maybe do some pictures of just your LO, just your family with your LO, your family & siblings, and then your family & siblings and their fiancees? That way it looks like you just want a bunch of options and aren't purposely excluding anyone.

Hm. When I first started dating my husband, his parents had a strict "no girlfriends" in the family photos until they were married in.

It depends on how close the fiance is. When I was a Fiance I had already been dating for 10 years so I was part of the family.

For my family, I would include the fiance.
However, my sister's baby daddy ended up in my wedding family picture - holding my nephew!!! - and I'm not happy

@.twist.: don't care if she's in regular photos, but these are photos i want done at a studio. My parents don't know her either.
@Adira: That's a good idea. Maybe we'll just have her for the photos with just his side of the family.

@regberadaisy: They've broken up a few times, and even postponed the wedding! I like her just fine, but i remember during one break up, i was annoyed that she was in our wedding photos.

I would take two photos. One with her in it and one without her. I wasn't shy about wedding photos with just DH and his bio oarents and then one with his bio parents plus their spouses.

@Freckles: Yeah, I think as long as you include her in some of the photos, she and your BIL won't feel offended. You could do some that are meant for your side of the family that don't include her and them some that are meant for your husband's side of the family that do. That should be good enough!

@Freckles: that is annoying. I hear ya bc one of our last few full family photos with my deceased BIL has other BIL's ex wife in it. I just want to x-acto her out. At least she never came to our wedding so we have the pictures from that. Win!

I always wonder what the heck to do in these situations as well, it's much more complicated in my husband's family because 2 of his siblings are not married, and his sister is now in the process of getting a divorce.
I probably wouldn't include the fiancee.

They're engaged, it'd be rude to not include her. But maybe you could do a "siblings only" photo or something that excludes her but isn't....obvious?

I'd do a few different sets. Definitely one of just immediate family only. Hate to say it, but even husbands/wives come and go, but your immediate family will never change.

@swurlygurl: My ex husband is forever in my brother's wedding photos. We were actually married, then, but it's awkward to look at them, now, especially since I'm happily remarried to DH, whom my family all loves.

I would do her in some and out of some. When I was dating DH, his brother got married, I was included in some and then they did some without. I completely understood & was in no way offended that they took some without me.

If it's an extended family picture, I'd definitely include the fiance. She's part of the family, imo.

Reading the history of their on and off again status and postponing the wedding...I wouldn't be shy about omitting her for this. My bff has family portraits like that of her dad's family, where my bff's brother's fiance at the time is in it. She turned out to be psycho though, and she's no where near their family anymore. When my bff got married, she photo shopped the ex in and pasted in her hubby and son, lol.

I'd pre-warn the photographer and get her to take some without spouses, some with all of them, and then say something like "ok who's married?? everyone else get out for this one..." that way it seems like the photogs idea. I know a friend got married and the photog kicked out both of her PREGNANT sisters HUSBANDS from the family pic so they had one without them "just in case". I think that was a bit overkill, but now they will forever have a picture that works if anyone splits up.

I think only family should be in family portraits. No fiance/es, gf/bfs. :T
I'm sure she'd feel offended if she wasn't included though.
Oh well! Too bad.

Since they've broken up before I wouldn't feel as bad about leaving her out. Maybe take one with her in it to keep the peace?
My uncle dragged his girlfriend of a few months into our family picture at my wedding and she was drunk as a skunk...she actually turned out to be an alcoholic and they broke up soon after my wedding. I'm still annoyed when I look at the picture. I didn't realize she was even in it at the time.
