Has anyone heard that there is a new recommendation to get a whooping cough booster after 5 years as an adult if you're going to be around a baby? My bro and SIL are asking us to get the booster to be around their baby (even though we're only going to see him monthly or so) when we both got the vaccine when I was pregnant about 5 years and 3 months ago. The only thing I can find online is 10 years, if anything. We're going to do it, of course, since it couldn't hurt. I just wasnt in a rush about it.

I thought Tdap was only every 10 years also. I'm surw it can't hurt because they will give you one every single pregnancy even if you're having Irish twins.

The guidelines are shifting in practice but not policies yet. There is the fear that the booster is not as effective as it was in years previously, I think a different formulation is part of it?? Anyway, my OB and my mom's GP both recommended re-upping for all people in close / regular contact with a newborn.

@DesertDreams88: well I'm glad to hear it's not just their pediatrician. But we had our vaccines about 5 years and 3 months ago. So I figured we were close enough to the 5 year mark. I told them we would do it relatively soon, but now they are mad that we haven't done it yet. I feel a little bad because obviously I'm pro-vaccine, but I also think they are being a little silly since it's so close to 5 years.

I think my OB was on that 5 year page - she said if dh had it with our kid 3 years ago he could skip, but if 6 (our first) he should get it again.

@DesertDreams88: let me preface this by saying that I am totally going to get the shot soon. I dont want to risk it.
Anyways, those articles all talked about protection waning over time in children and adolescents, but nothing really talked about adults. The only thing I saw was that because of the changes in the way the vaccine is created now (acellular instead of whole cell), kids these days have never had the more protective whole cell vaccine and that the boosters are more effective for adults who got the older version as children. The only other place adults were mentioned said that it's recommended to get a booster before the 10 year mark that the CDC reports. But no specific timeline was given. It's just really surprising to me that there's nothing online that I could find that specifically addresses the 5 year guideline. -
We went through this last year with my doctor,my parents doctor,my kids doctor, and my midwife. All said that it was 5 years since your last vaccine, so if you got it 5y3m ago and the baby will be born in 6m, they'd view you as 9 months overdue. So in practice if you got it less than 4 years ago they recommend getting it again. They are in the process of officially changing the recommendations.
Honestly, I get where you are coming from. But for family unity just get the vaccine. Whooping cough is no joke.

@Pollywog: that makes sense. And, yeah, just for their peace of mind and not causing issues with family, I just said, yes we'll do it this weekend. And left it at that. Even though I wanted to point out that we're not even close to primary caregivers and will see him, max, once a month or so for a few hours while they are there.
