Anyone had (or their LO had) whooping cough?

I had it as a kid, when I was 1.5 years. My twins had a likely exposure this winter and went on antibiotics for it.

@MerryC: oh no were they vaccinated? I'm asking because our nanny is afraid her baby has it, and even though LMW is vaccinated, I'm wondering if she could possibly still catch it. All of us are a little under the weather right now.

@mrs. wagon: yep! They had 2 of 3 of their dtap series, and we gave them the 3rd immediately after learning of the exposure. Our ped just chose to err on the side of caution since they were only 6 months at the time, and I couldn't take a risk of infant twins with wc for months. The early symptoms are so mild, it's just kind of like a cold. But once it gets bad, it's really hard to get rid of. You can get a culture that tells more definitively, so your nanny may want to do that for her daughter, and go from there.
I had it, but I was not vaxed as a baby. My family said it was awful, but luckily I never ended up in the hospital or anything.

@MerryC: oh man. good idea to be cautious with 6 month old twins...!!! Our nanny is taking her baby in at 2pm, and I'm guessing they'll do a culture then. Since we all have cold symptoms that got me really worried...!!! Gahh.

Oh no! I hope neither LMW nor nanny's LO has it
I had it as a teenager, it sucked, but probably far less than it would for a baby with it. One thing though, when I was tested they told me I didn't have it, it wasn't until I was getting worse and they had me come in again & they told me they were just going to start treating me for it and send another test in because there is a high false negative on the test for it, then it turned out I did have it & still have minor lung damage because I didn't get treated quickly.

@mrs. wagon: try not to worry! It's probably not the whoop. But typically the culture takes a few days, so you might be in limbo the rest of the week. Hopefully you are all feeling better soon!

@mrs. bird: that sucks that you were misdiagnosed! Definitely one of the reasons why we just started on the antibiotics with the doctors strong suspicion, rather than waiting for the culture. You can be most of the way through a zpack by the time the results are back. Its funny bc I totally avoid antibiotics if at all possible, but this is something I didn't want to risk.

Ugh, I had whooping cough when I was in middle school. It was awful. We ended up having the department of health (or something like that) calling us to try to narrow the "outbreak" down... Not fun.
