My MIL brought her boyfriend (who is close to their entire family and is at all holiday dinners, barbecues, etc). I like the guy! Labor and birth was just such a sensitive raw emotional experience that it just felt awkward to me. Ha! Reading some of the stories on another thread about privacy tho, I know this was "nothing"!

WE were lucky enough to not have any awkward visitors. Our first we kept it to only immediate family and my best friends due to being in the NICU. and Our second was just close family and friends which was nice.

I'm guessing this was related to my minister story?
To recap -- my minister came to visit and didn't leave when my doctor came in for rounds. I was on hospital bed rest for bleeding and my doctor had a lot of detailed questions that I would NOT have wanted to share with my minister (or really anyone but DH).

A good friend brought her mother in law, who was visiting from South Africa and who I had never met. 24 hours post c section, I'm in a hospital gown, and a total stranger wants to hold my newborn.

@LBee: Is there a reason you didn't ask him to step outside? I think it's odd that he didn't offer.
The only people who visited us in the hospital were my parents. It was a little weird with nursing but we managed and it wasn't that bad.
After experiencing pregnancy, labor/delivery and postpartum recovery, I just do what I need to do and let other people absorb the awkwardness. If I need to breastfeed in public or have some other medical issue, then I am going to do what I need to do to address it. I don't have the time or energy to worry about it any more. It's so refreshing!

@ElbieKay: I think I expected him to (and then thought my doctor might ask because of HIPPA or something) and then by the time I realized he wasn't leaving we were too far into the conversation. I'm incredibly non confrontational and it did not serve me well in this situation.

My friend and her boyfriend came. It was only awkward because he got a full view of my boobs while I was breastfeeding and it was totally weird. Next time, I think my church will want to come visit but hopefully none of them will want to go to the hospital (it's in another state) and will just visit at home.

@LBee: That is pretty unprofessional / insensitive of your minister! I would expect clergy to be more in tune with this sort of issue.

Ugh, my mom brought her minister!!!!! She asked ahead of time and I said ABSOLUTELY NOT. But she brought him anyway with some lameass excuse 'oh, he just happened to be at the hospital and wanted to stop by and pray with you' - girl, please. Even if he was (he wasn't), I said NO.
I was pissed. I'm not even religious.
ETA: I'm still pissed. Ha!

I work with all men. We get along and I consider most of them friends, but at different meetings, several different coworkers have said, let us know when you want us all to visit you at the hospital.
Not "if" but "when".
I think 7 male coworkers dropping by the hospital has the potential to be super awkward! I'm pretty sure I'll be able to avoid it, though. -
@Littlebit: I would be furious! And I could see my MIL doing the same thing.

My father in law. He is just an awkward person all the time - he is the long hugging creeper in the family. He wanted to stay in when I was trying to breastfeed. Also, he ALWAYS tries to flirt with any woman and then tries to get back with his ex-wife (MIL). I hate having him around.

Not awkward the whole time but my in laws and dad and step mom all desperately wanted to meet baby shortly after golden hour and lo had finally just started to nurse so after being asked like 12 times I let them in for like 2 min to meet the baby....attached to my boob. It's funny now but at the time it was like just leave us alone

Thankfully no one. We only had immediate family come and visit! Although we had DD at 11 PM, and my mom and my sister were already at the hospital (because my dad was in the same hospital for a different issue, and they came up to labor and delivery without my consent. I wasn't too thrilled about that because I had just gotten up to use the bathroom and try to clean up a bit, and I'm barely able to walk, and there they are staring at me......so actually I guess that was pretty awkward..

My FIL came by during my induction. He cried hysterically when he saw me in pain and was eventually asked to leave by our nurse.
@TemperanceBrennan: ha, two of my male coworkers dropped by the day after LO 2 was born. I thought it was going to awkward but they made me laugh the whole time.

My 15 year old nephew. He came with my SIL and they arrived as I was latching the baby on. He didn't know where to look.

For me, it wasn't during the birth (I had a csec), it was shortly after. My IL's showed up, after DH told them to wait a day. I wasn't feeling well after the csec (throwing up) and REALLY wanted to be left alone. They didn't care and showed up anyway. We already didn't have a good/close relationship, so the fact that they didn't respect my/our feelings was really offputting.

@TemperanceBrennan: Don't tell them you had the baby until you are home. Seriously. Nobody knew we were in the hospital until a few hours after she was born. It was glorious. But none of my coworkers stopped by either (I delivered just across the state line and people in my city act like IN is a different country or something).

First my mom, who showed up for DS's birth and looked very green around the gills... I felt so bad for her and wished I'd been more clear that I only want DH to be there! Then when he was born, my BIL brought all three of his kids to meet their cousin - slightly awkward because I did not enjoy looking awful in front of all these people I'm not close to. And then my dad came, and I had to make him sit in the hallway for an hour because DS would not stop nursing.
Thankfully DD had fewer visitors, and I had the sense to tell people if it wasn't a good time (with an apology of course!)

Wow. Sounds like I was lucky! No awkward visitors here. Or maybe it's just that I'm not easily embarrassed. We had my parents, my aunt and uncle, his aunt and uncle, my grandmother and our neighbors visit. People either left when it was time to breastfeed or they didn't care.

Wow! You all had lots of visitors. We only had my parents, my in-laws, and my SIL visit. My bro didn't come since he had 2 kids and it's far. I would dislike having any other visitors and actually felt like it was too much when both sets of parents came to visit BOTH days.
