Why did you turn your car seat to face forward? Let me know any answers I miss!

20 months aka when he screamed and thrashed and I had a hard time getting him into the RF seat in my SUV.

I haven't moved it yet but our families and friends think we are weird and over the top. LO hasn't complained yet.

We haven't even installed the convertible yet, but in my experience IRL, most people seem to do FF either when they outgrow the infant seat, at 1, because the kid hated RF and screamed the whole car ride, or because they look too big and uncomfortable even if technically the manufacturer says they could stay RF. I don't know many people who kept their LOs RF until 2. I withhold any judgment on the matter since I haven't been there myself yet!

I haven't yet at 18 months and I'm not sure when I will. LO is content for the time being and a peanut, so we are in no rush.

Added another option-- too hard to get the kid into the seat.

DS was on accident - I just had DD and I wanted her car seat behind the passenger side so I asked DH to moved DS's to the other side - when he did that he put him FF (he was 2.5 yrs old)
I was mad at first and then kinda didn't care, I had a newborn and was focused on that. So he stayed FF.
With DD I think she was 18 months? We had a long car ride (10 hours) and we have a DVD player and I thought if she could see the movie she would do better on the trip - she stayed FF after that.

We're still RF at 25 months but I think we are soon going to turn him around because it's getting hard to get him in since I drive a smallish car.

She was almost 2 and it got dangerous trying to drive while holding her hand. She freaked because she couldn't see us.

Switched at 2 after we moved back to the states. DH and my mom pressured me into doing it, saying I was ridiculous and she looked uncomfortable, and I gave in.

We turned our boys around at 15 months, which is an unpopular choice here, but it has made our lives so much better when we travel. They were seriously screaming for hours in the car, and our nerves were taking a beating. It was also getting hard to get them in RF, because they thrashed and kicked so much since they didn't like it. We turned them for a trip, and it was like night and day. They were happy almost the entire trip, we could put on a little video when they got fussy, and they still slept when we were driving late at night. I feel slightly guilty about it, but I'm certain our driving is much safer without the constant screaming!

We turned our seat around at about 30 months, when my son outgrew the height limit for our seat (I ordered this one before I knew about higher limit seats for rear facing).
We also began to have bouts of car sickness on longer trips while rearfacing, so it made sense to switch at that point.

We switched her just a few weeks ago at almost 22 months, she would throw tantrums while we tried to get her in the car and would scream our entire way to where we were going, it was stressful, it was time.

She reached the height limit for our seat at 15ish months so we switched right around then.

she's 21 months. I'm hoping to get to 2 years old but I'm not going to sweat it if I have to turn her earlier. she doesn't mind it right now, but it's not super easy getting her in and I'm going to be hugely pregnant this fall/winter.
she's also a peanut..only 21 lbs!

@Mrs. Blue: Glad that it is helping!! I couldn't imagine!

i'm curious about this also. thanks for posting an anonymous poll.

We haven't switched yet, but we'll switch either when it becomes too difficult to put him in rear facing or when we have baby #2, because we can't fit two seats rear-facing.

We turned DS1 at 3 years old because that's when he started to hate riding RF and he would undo the chest clip and squeeze his way out of his straps. Obviously that's super unsafe so we turned him FF and he was fine. And at 3 I was ok with FF.
DS2 is 2.5 years old and still RF and happy.

Haven't yet at 18 months, hoping to make it to 2 years! We have a long road trip to Buffalo in December so we are thinking we'll switch him then. He turns 2 late December.

@Mrs. Blue: I'm glad it helped! C is usually fine with it but there have been occasions when she is just screaming and it's so hard to concentrate on driving. I definitely think its safer to have a driver focusing in the road and ff than a distracted driver with rf.

Ds is 25 months and at least once a day, I bonk his head getting him in RF. We keep talking about turning it soon but honestly have just been lazy about finding the manual to figure out how to properly install/tether it.

We FF at 14 months when we moved to Europe. The car we were using was too small to accommodate the seat RF with room for the passenger.

We are rear-facing at 21 months (18 adjusted) and will continue as long as possible. Some my LO is small, I don't really feel comfortable using 2 as the cutoff, so we will go at least until then, but will try to wait for the height limit. I think the type of seat makes a huge difference in how long kids are comfortable. We have a Recaro Performance Ride and I really like it.

R is still RF at 15 months. I am hoping to keep her till 2. But if she starts screaming or it is too hard to get her in her seat, then I will switch her before.

@Mrs. Confetti: hah! so glad I'm not the only one who does that. sorry, O. at least there's rubber along the top of the doorframe

2 years 7 months and still RF but talk about turning her FF. She is getting really tall but she has no problem RF and never complains so we haven't done it. Her friend is 3 and we carpooled to school and she was FF - we asked LO if she wanted to sit like that and she said no. I think we will turn her when she turns 3 or when she hits 40lbs - whichever comes first

We're still rear-facing at almost 20 months old and planning to keep it that way until at least 2. He is very small and while he doesn't like to get into the car set (that's not a new thing at all) he seems to be happy enough to be RF.

@sorrycharlie: this! (except I''m not hugely pregnant [yet! ]).
We're still RF at 20 months and I"m guessing at some point while pregnant with #2 we will switch. But we'll definitely make it at least til 2 I think.
squash / 13764 posts
@Mrs. Confetti: yep that too--now that it's installed RF I don't want to deal with figuring out how to install it FF!
pomegranate / 3438 posts
We switched at 23 months because DH had surgery and it was easier for DS to get into his seat by himself with it FF.
pear / 1895 posts
So far, my 17 month old is fine to RF. We won't turn him until it's absolutely necessary (either he outgrows his seat RF or he becomes just miserable).
pomelo / 5720 posts
We haven't switched yet (almost 23 months) and I assume we won't until we buy a new car, sometime this summer. I won't switch him until at least 2 though.

We still RT at 2 years and will continue RT until she's too big for her car seat. The max weight on it is 25 kilos (55 lbs), but according to the local traffic laws, height is the main factor. Her head can't touch the top of her carseat. When it does, we'll get a booster seat that's forward facing.
coconut / 8279 posts
J was just turned 2.5, I was hoping he would make it longer, but he outgrew the RF height limit, so I turned him. Kind of wish I bought a different seat so we could RF longer.
grapefruit / 4291 posts
We've just about hit the rf limit on our Britax at almost 21 months but I'm still contemplating buying a Cosco Scenera so she can remain rf'ing.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
We did around 15 months because it was getting too hard to get him in and out the seat. It was harder for me being pregnant. Also, we were comfortable with it because of his size - he was over 30 pounds and has always been a big kid.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
LO is currently 19.5 months and quite small for his age - he weighs about 22 pounds. So we have no intention of turning him around anytime soon. I figure we will do it for as long as we can, hopefully a few more years. It is a bit hard to get him in and out, but I think the seat is a bit too big to be rf in our current car.....I am hoping that is fixed when we upgrade to a minivan which we will do this summer.
