I don't know why shipping TO Canada is so expensive, but I can say that shipping from and within Canada is also very expensive. I'm guessing it likely had to do with the fact that we are the second largest country in the world with a lot of ground to cover, but only about 34 million people to support our postal service. So things cost more on a per person basis.

Our mail service is in the red at the moment and they're actually cutting back on services, including door-to-door mail delivery (they'll deliver to community boxes instead). And they're significantly raising the cost of stamps. People are using the mail less and less, and things are therefore costing more in order for our postal service to continue to exist.

Eta: in my experience around the world, it may not be so much that it's expensive to ship to/within Canada, more that it's just really cheap to ship within the US!

@mrbee: ugh! Shipping prices stink!

What I love is when people jack up APO shipping costs. Um... it's the same rates as domestic US postage, and it takes 30 seconds to fill out the required customs form.

I've grown to really hate shipping anything since living here.
