We are moving to Richmond, VA for my husband's job. We just signed the contract to sell our current house (much faster than we anticipated). We have nowhere to live once we close in 30 days. We're looking to rent but can't find a rental that fits our needs (price plus will allow a dog and cat). I have a suspicion we're going to have to rent site unseen because all we have contacted figure they'll be rented before my husband gets there in two weeks. PANIC

Ugh, finding a place to live in a short amount of time is so stressful! We've been there and done that twice now! I hope you're able to find the perfect rental that meets your needs!

Scary title!
It will all work out. This happened to my parents when they moved to Seattle. My mom just kept thinking to herself, "The house that you need, needs you." They were able to find the perfect house 12 hours before they had to have their rental truck returned.

I second @scg00387: , an extended-stay hotel is probably your best plan. I've done the sight-unseen thing because that's what my DH wanted to do, and it was okay but I'd have really preferred to see apartments in person. I think we'd have been happier if we had (we moved again as soon as that lease was up). It's not optimal but given your situation, I think it's the least stressful option! Good luck!

I agree with the suggestion to do an extended stay hotel. You should also check out CL to see if there is anything your husband can view when he gets there!

That JUST happened to us! House sold in a week and we were not prepared for that at all. Luckily we were able to move in with my parents for 6 weeks. It also happened to my sister and they chose an extended stay hotel. It has its pros and cons but I would choose that over renting something sight unseen that you might potentially hate. Better to take your time and find somewhere you will be happy living!

@purrpletulips: Are you looking for a short term solution in Richmond or where you are currently? If it's in Richmond I can tell you where DH and I lived when we were first married. They offer short term leases and allow pets (townhomes). We were in a similar situation where we needed something immediately and they were able to accommodate. If you're interested, wall me.

@purrpletulips: Wow, eerily similar situation! My DH just got a job in Richmond and we're having to make a seriously scrambled move.. we have to be there August 5th! The decent 3BR rentals we were finding kept slipping through our fingers (local people would turn in their completed applications before we could email/fax ours in from NY). We were seriously concerned that we were going to be homeless 2 weeks from now. And to make matters more stressful, we have a 2.5week old newborn!
We finally found a place and signed the lease today. If you wall me some of what you're looking for, I'm happy to help you search. I think I've checked out every rental in a 20 mile radius, haha

@thismustbetheplace: DH will be working for GE corporate. What area are you going to be living in, you very likely could have signed for one of the places we were looking because if I recall two were expecting to have leases signed by today.

@purrpletulips: we will be living in the Southside/north chesterfield area, specifically the Piney Knolls neighborhood. Cute little 3BR brick ranch, found it on Zillow. We're so relieved to have a place to go! Does GE offer any relocation assistance? Maybe their HR people have some resources down there. We had friends who live in the city check out houses for us. We couldn't have done it without them.

@thismustbetheplace: GE does offer some relocation assistance but not in DH's pay bracket. Good news to report is that we have a potential house in Midlothian that we are looking to sign a lease on. DH will be in Richmond next week and will do a once over at that time however we've seen pictures, and when we were there over 4th of July weekend we drove around the neighborhood (didn't know about the house at the time but had been told by people to check out the area).
