Flying from the West coast to the East coast (5-6 hours) this Fall when my LO will be 15 months old. We don't do any screen time now other then weekly Skype with grandparents. Do you think the ipad will work at all, to keep him distracted with videos or kid apps?
What are you favorite videos and apps for LO on plane rides?

We definitely plan to bring the iPad for J on his trip this summer! His favorite apps are:
Endless alphabet
Lazoo
and PBS kids
Oh and he loves youtube since he likes to watch his favorite music videos from signing time or elizabeth mitchell -
Flying alone next Friday with my 16 month old - I sure hope so!!!
She gets to use my iPad for maybe 5-10 minutes every week or two. She LOVES the Fisher Price apps! Especially the Puppy Play one - it has videos of cute cartoon animals on it. They're all free, so easy enough to try out!

If he doesn't usually get screentime, I doubt it'll help.
We took our 18m old and brought our ipad, and it didn't help one bit because lo doesn't watch tv to begin with. He only uses my phone or ipad for facetime with grandparents and for music. But, he REFUSED to put in the headphones, so music didn't happen anyway.
To be honest, it wasn't a fun plane ride, but the people around us all told us to relax and that he was "just being a child..we've all been there before." So, their understanding was tremendously helpful. -
We flew when LO was 15.5/16 months old and we definitely used the iPad! He watched a few shows/videos that we downloaded--Fireman Sam, Yo Gabba Gabba, and some videos about construction vehicles.
My advice would be to introduce him to these videos before the trip. It takes my LO a few times to get interested in any type of show, so if that had been the first time he saw it, he wouldn't have really been into it.
Also, new lift the flap books! We brought a Trucks one that entertained LO for like 3 hours. It was amazing.

@hilsy85: good idea, we will have to practice (sounds weird cuz I am really not into screen time!) watching videos and using headphones before the trip. I will have to get some flap books for the trip too. He is almost 12 months now and not into them yet.

You have to download videos to your device, otherwise, unless you have wifi, you can't use YouTube.
We're those terrible people that use the ipad without headphones on the plane.....ducking out, lol!

It will definitely help! We just flew on Friday with our 16 mo twins and the iPad totally helped occupy their attention. I agree with others to introduce your LO to the apps ahead of time so they are familiar.

@looch: we don't use headphones either!! But honestly, I can barely hear the iPad when I'm sitting right next to it. Planes are loud!
At 15 months we just had games on the iPad because he wasn't into TV then. Peekaboo Pets and Peekaboo HD were his favourite. I also second lift-the-flap books (the more flaps the better!), markers and scrap paper. I bought these markers that had a rolling stamp on one end and he loved them!
Now at 2 he watches movies/plays games on the iPad, flips through books and plays with stickers when we fly.

I'm so worried about this! We don't even have an ipad and E doesn't get screen time, so I don't know how to entertain her for 3 hours on a flight in July. I'm going to start introducing her to some baby einstein videos or something, i don't know!

Yes! We on long flights we usually rent one of the ipads on the plane with preloaded movies it really helps my little one. We also always bring headphones so that she can listen to music either on our phones or she can plug it into the armrest and play with the buttons.
Others things that have worked for us are books, stickers, and the coloring packs that you can find at Target for $1.

We thought this would work for our LO when she was 13 months. But we never let her have screen time so she didn't get it. Luckily for us it was a shorter flight and she slept most of the time anyway.

We're flying pretty soon with my 15-month old and so I've been slowly introducing her to the iPad. We usually just use it to FaceTime, but I'm trying to get her used to it. We're flying during bedtime, but I want to have backup options just in case she doesn't sleep!

We use the ipad as a special treat (mostly reserved for plane rides) and it works well for us. My/LO’s favorite apps are:
Elmo ABC's (has videos, word/item association, tracing letters, a place where your LO can "color" on the screen and draw things and lots more. Awesome app, well worth the $$).
PianoBall - this is better with sound
The Monster at the End of the Story (Elmo and Grover, has the story plus activities for LO to do built into every page)
Talking Ginger Kitty (better with sound, the cat repeats whatever LO says it to, but you can also wash kitty, pet kitty (and it purrs), and brush kitties teeth)
Bloom (not a kids app, but awesome for LO)
Also, there is a good Disney movie app. When you buy new Disney movies, there is a special code inside the dvd case and you log on to this app, put in the code and it downloads the entire movie to your ipad. You need wifi to download the movie, so just DL them before you fly, but you can watch them without having access to wifi.
