We will do separate parties. My family is just too big.

I plan on just having one. I might do something special with just me, DH, and the kiddo on his actual bday should it fall on a different day than the party.

As a kid, I only had a party for one birthday (at McDonald's). All the other birthdays were just immediate family. I'd like to do a little more than that, but I don't see the need for there to be a party every year, even if it's a family party (including cousins/grandparents/etc.) As to whether I would combine family & friends, I guess it just depends on how old the kids are & how many people we invited.

@loveisstrange: I agree! once we started having friends parties, that's the only party we got! we'll probably do the same for our kids.

Friends party = only party.

I don't have the time, money or energy to do multiple birthday parties!

Ain't nobody got time for that! We'll have 1 until she gets older, and then yeah, we will probably do a small, family-only party (and by party I mean dinner & cake!), and then a bigger one where she can have all her friends.
