I'm sure my girls are going to ask for a pet in the future. I think we would be willing to get them something small but probably not anything like a dog. We have 2 cats that won't like forever so maybe another cat or small animal that will probably stink and become my responsibility

No. I don't want to take care of a stinky rabbit, guinea pig, mouse, gerbil, etc. It all ends up on the parent. We have a dog now and will probably get another when our dog passes away. I think we will let our lo choose the dog and let her claim that pet as hers. Then when she asks we can tell her that dog is hers.
I'll allow a fish in a bowl but I don't want to worry about a big fish tank.

No; very firmly no. I'm sure it happens, but I've never seen an instance where the "kid's pet" didn't become the responsibility of the parent. The most I would do would be a fish. Everything else is a family pet, belonging to the family.
One of my admins let her teenage daughter get a kitten and said since it was the daughters, the daughter had to pay for the kitten's vetting. Well, guess how that ended up. Yup, yet another litter of kittens for the animal shelter to vet, adopt out or euthanize. Makes my blood boil.

My little guy is 2.5 and has a fish (we have a family cat, but he in the family before our son came along). Every morning and evening we make sure that he feeds "fishy fish" and he helps to clean his bowl every week.

My daughter is obsessed with animals, so she will probably take responsibility for a puppy my mom just got.

Sure, something small to start with like fish or turtles, and I'm willing to move onto bigger ones as she/they get older. We'll probably always have a dog as a family pet anyway. I love animals so I don't mind taking care of them, as long as they're learning to be responsible for them too and help out.

DS has a 30 gallon fish tank in his room (been there since we moved in and I just planned his room around it instead of moving it). The last fish just died so DH is going to take him to pick out new fish for it. We will probably get a dog in a few years and let him help us choose one to adopt. But it won't be just his dog it will be the family dog.

Nope – I believe in all pets being family pets. Especially because I have never seen an instance where a child actually takes full responsibility for "their" pet.

We grew up with hamsters, rabbits and such and they are stinky.....lol
