They are 4.5 years and 16 months and they both have pierced ears. They were done at 12 months for both. The older just now is asking to wear different earrings and we are learning that she's can't wear cheaper metals.

@agold: horrific in what way? That's interesting. My parents didn't let me til I was 18 and It was nothing close to horrific for me.

My 3.5 yo just asked and I'm not ready yet! I think I want to wait until she is at least 9.

My mum waited until I was 5 and I had asked about 4-5 times. She said I was stunned but other wise fine. I got my ears done again as a teenager. It was harder as a teenager. If we ever have a girl I will wait until she asks a couple times and we can discuss the care and everything.

When she asks. Any time after the age of 5.

@anonysquire: I nearly passed out from the pain of the first ear being pierced. I cried and literally threw a teenage tantrum. It took an hour or so before I would sit back down to do the other ear. I always wished it would have just been done when I was a baby.

I am aware of possible metal sensitivities since I deal with that. But is the care for newborns ear piercings really hard? I just remember having to twirl the earrings so the skin didn't try to grow back and use some alcohol type solution for a while.

I had mine done when I was 5 - apparently I begged my Mum, so we'll see what G decides. I won't be doing it until she asks, though.

I haven't pierced either of my daughters ears, but if they ask for them in the future I will take them. I had mine done when I was a little baby, and another 3 times as a teenager.

Just about every Greek girl has her ears pierced as a baby, but ehhhh I just couldn't be bothered with taking my babies to do it.

We pierced DDs ears at 1 year, it's family tradition and we got it done by needle at a reputable piercing studio. No regrets. Mine were done at the same age.

I am super opposed to piercing a child's ears before they want it. I'll let my daughter gets hers done when she asks for it and seems old enough to care for it. Though no one in her social circle has it done, so I kind of wonder if she'll ever want it.

I'll wait until she's old enough to care for them, and be responsible for keeping track of earrings. I got mine pierced at 11, and I feel like that was a good age for me. It was a special outing with my mom, I had fun picking out earrings, I was old enough to understand that it was permanent. I think 9 to 13 is a good age range for me to be comfortable with it.

We will just wait till she wants to.

No way. I'm already dreading her getting blood drawn at her 1 year appt this week so I can't imagine putting her through the pain for silly earrings!

When she asks consistently, and I think she's old enough to take part in the responsibility of caring for them. I got my ears pierced for my 8th birthday, and I think it was pretty perfect.

This is assuming, of course, that DH is on-board

If and when she asks. We think it's a rite of passage...having the bravery to get it done.

I had mine done when I was 10 and I felt so proud and special. I don't want to take that away from any daughters I may have. I will wait until they want to get it done. It hurts for a second, but at least when they're older you can explain that it's going to hurt. You can't explain that to a baby.
