Don't know, depends on what she shows an interest in! We'll definitely have her involved in some sort of activities.. not sure if that will be dance or sports or swimming or gymnastics or maybe some combo of those.

Only if she shows an interest in dancing enough to take scheduled classes.

I'd like him to learn how to lead and how to competently do at least a few social/ballroom dances. Guys who know how to lead and who are comfortable on the dance floor get extra points in the attractiveness category, in my book. I also think social/ballroom dancing is excellent practice for learning to work in concert with your partner.

I'm not sure. I certainly won't push it but if she asks to go I might have to reconsider.....

I always wanted to dance as a little girl. I begged my parents for dance lessons but they were both in the entertainment industry (I spent my childhood backstage at shows and in TV studios) and they felt strongly that they didn't want me exposed to those kinds of pressures (weight/image issues etc). My mum once saw her choreographer friend screaming at his girls that they were too fat.....

I really didn't understand her view back then (I thought she was mean) but now I have a daughter of my own I really want to protect her from that world until I feel she is emotionally ready (like: grown up?!).

So I voted "I haven't decided". We will play it by ear. But I wont be happy about it.

@chopsuey: Her outfit is too cute. After reading this thread I did some research and there's a dance studio near us that has Mommy & Me classes starting at 18 months. I'm already counting down to when I can sign us up!

um, i want to enroll her now, but DH says not yet. she's 3 months, i think she'd get the hang of it...no? too early? well definitely when she starts walking then! (i was less than 2 when i started!)

@Cherrybee: aww that makes me so sad. My parents tried several places before they fell upon the right one - one that was nurturing and positive rather than superficial and pressure-filled. obviously you can't eliminate all possibilities of body image issues, but for me, the positives (socially, physically, mentally) far outweighed the negatives. I hope if you do decide to enroll her, you can find a nurturing environment like the one i was raised in (literally, i feel like i was raised there!)

Not sure. The Y has tons of classes, so we'll probably sign both kids up for some, and possibly dance/ballet

@Cherrybee: look into creative movement....there are lots of dance classes that aren't as rigid or competitive as ballet can be. I took creative movement from age 4 to age 12, and we did all different kinds of dance, including African and "ballet style". Especially as a little kid it was totally about playing with the way your body can move to music, which is (in my opinion) how it should be!
