Anyone love Windows 8? I'm looking for a new laptop and everything's running Windows 8. I'm a XP lover and I'm a little hesitant. It looks too much like a tablet to me.

Do you love it? Hate it? I don't want to go through the hassle to wipe it clean and install an older OS. I'm too cheap to buy a MacBook, but it's tempting if everything else runs Windows 8! Convince me that it's going to be OK. Or that you hate it and I should stay away.

Any advice appreciated (my laptop now is on it's last leg!)

I don't have personal experience but DH has worked with it & he said he doesn't like it. Didn't really ask the specifics as to why though. *shrugs shoulders*

I hate windows 8 personally. BUT you can still get Windows 7 machines (both dell and hp offer a style). I am hoping the 8.1 update improves windows 8 drastically.

@runsyellowlites: @brownie: Thanks for your response. I've only read about it and already hate it. It's supposed to be the new standard, and I'm trying to figure out if it's just me hating change or if it really does suck. I'm glad to know I'm not alone!

Thing is, if I want an affordable laptop locally, it's really hard to find one running Windows 7, unless I drop some serious cash And I've checked on the Dell and HP website directly and they don't offer anything other than Windows 8 where we live.

@SugarplumsMom: Where do you live? I agree that Windows 8 is on the cheaper computers. 8.1 is coming out and it will return the start menu so that will be nice. If you get a touch screen it is pretty cool. I just bought my mom a new computer with Windows 8.

You could always get a chromebook. They are super cheap, small laptops with the Chrome OS (based on Linux). Really not too hard to figure out.

Hate isn't a strong enough word for how I feel about windows 8. I cannot wait for the update!

I have it and actually like it. There is definitely a learning curve and you have to be open to change. It reminds me a lot of a phone. I find it to be easy to use and it's efficient for my needs.

@brownie: We're in Sweden. DH's trying to tell me that I just have to live with it and learn to use it. I'm not really for a chromebook. I found a few laptops with a touch screen that are affordable, maybe Windows 8 wouldn't be so bad on it.

I'm a dinosaur. I specifically went out of my way a few years ago to buy a laptop with XP because I didn't want Windows 7 or Vista. It was cheap with no-frills, but I just needed to replace my pretty, specially made HP that was total and utter crap

OK, I'm going to mourn my laptops now. I must conform. Sob.

I have it on my new laptop. It took a couple of days to get used to it, but now its second nature. I am not sure if I know all of the little ins and outs of it but for what I use my laptop for, its good.

It takes some getting used to! I think all new user interfaces come with a learning curve though.

We have a windows 8 laptop. We hate it. We've discussed that it would be a fine OS on a phone, but on the laptop without a touch screen, it's a nightmare.

I personally have a laptop with Windows 7, but I HATE Windows 8. I think the setup is fine for a mobile/touchscreen device, but its awkward in a laptop setting. I'm currently saving up for a Mac. I'd rather spend $$$ on a computer system with a track record of lasting forever than to keep having to replace my windows laptop every few years.

Another hater here. I keep it on desktop mode and completely ignore the tiles. I also hate that it will restart without asking you. I've lost files that way.

I haven't used it yet. I'll probably stick to Windows 7 for now. It us still possible to get a new laptop with Windows 7. I just recently built a new computer for work and installed Windows 7 on it.

Hate it. DH just bought a new laptop and then we remembered I returned a brand new laptop about a year ago because it was windows 8 and I couldn't get the hang of it. You can make it so you use it just like windows 7 (ours is always on the "normal' desktop view so it feels like windows 7. I hate the tiles and all yhe swiping and crap it does.

@Mommytotwois: The Windows 8.1 is free. In general, updates to Windows are free since they often contain security updates and companies wants users to stay safe.

When they release a new version (e.g. Windows 9) -- that is when you'll have to pay to upgrade.

I backed up everything and prepped for my laptop's last days, but I can't bring myself to pick out a new one, even if it is for my birthday. I'm thinking about just using this until it really stops working.

Maybe if I'll wait a while longer I may convince myself to get a MacBook.
