I just crossed my legs and gasped in horror! That is more than twice DD's birth weight and I just can't imagine. It's only a couple of pounds less than what DD weighs now - ouch!!!!

Wow, I accomplished a 10 pounder a couple weeks ago, and my tailbone STILL hurts. I can't imagine...

Sounds like there have been some 20+ lb babies. It makes me sick to think about!

I don't understand how "no one knew how big he was" until his head was out! Wouldn't an ultrasound have given them SOME clue that there was an abnormally huge baby in there?!? I know they're not accurate, but damn! There should have been some clues!!!

The baby came out already able to wear 6 mos+ clothing. Ouch!

Oh my. My mom told me about the baby and the first words out of my mouth were, "that must have been a c-section." She didn't have an answer.

@princessbaby: here in the UK, NHS provided ultrasounds are only done at 12 weeks and 20 weeks so they would have had to have noticed it at the 20 week scan

@PrincessBaby: Yeah, I read about this yesterday and it seems to me that there must have been something lacking in terms of prenatal care.
I realize that in the UK u/s aren't standard past 19/20 weeks (it's the same here in Canada), but it still seems to me that something (GD testing, fundal palpation etc.) should have been able to betray the fact that this was NOT a normal sized baby and then an additional u/s should have been ordered. It's pretty scary, as the baby's shoulders got stuck during delivery and he was oxygen-deprived for something like five or 10 minutes.

@hergreenapples: The length of the oxygen deprivation is what shocked me - 5 min is way too long to go without oxygen - poor guy

Oh. My. God. 1) the oxygen deprivation is terrifying! 2) There have been babies over 20 pounds??? My almost 6 month old is only just under 19 and he's hugeeeeeeee to me. I cannot imagine.
