A lot of women in my twitter feed and facebook are vocal about voting for Romney, but when I ask them if they understand his policies on a woman's right to choose what do with her body when it comes to pregnancy especially in cases of rape, most of them think I am making stuff up until I show them links. It worries me that people are voting without really knowing the specifics of what they are voting for

I'm obviously not voting since I'm in Canada, but I thought I'd offer insight from a conservative who would vote Romney if she were American
I have much bigger concerns than the women's issues, like the economy. It really bothers me that people paint women with one brush and think our biggest issue should be women's rights. It is kind of offensive to me, like I only have one dimension!!

My BIL doesn't believe that any of those bills will actually pass. I'm not sure why he thinks that, but I just keep my mouth shut. I don't like talking politics with family.

But I do think a lot of the women voting for Romney actually do know exactly what they are voting for. I think people assume that all women believe in women's rights, but not all do.
I disagree with Romney on many more issues than just women's rights, so it's not even a question for me, but for many women he believes exactly like they do so why wouldn't they vote for him? -

I do know women who believe in women's rights, and who are voting for Romney because of the economy.
There are many reasons to vote for a candidate, and that's not necessarily the only one.

It's not just about a woman's right to choose, though. It's about access to healthcare, especially for under/uninsured women (ie, Planned Parenthood). It's about access to birth control options. You want to talk about economics? Ok, then it's about equal pay for equal work. It's about access to education, through student loans, and then being able to actually pay off those loans.

I know for me personally, I feel something like military cuts that will greatly affect our presence in & for the world along with economical issues come before some of the civil issues we need to work on.

I work in a very political, yet bipartisan environment so I work very hard at not judging anyone's reasons for supporting a given candidate. I can absolutely, 100% disagree with them without making it personal.

I have a problem with the attitude (on both sides) that people who disagree are uninformed or don't understand the issues at hand. We each prioritize the positions and issues that are most important to us and are lucky enough to live in a place where we can express those through both our vote and words.

@rattles: This. There's two different issues at hand in this thread: Voting when you are uninformed or misinformed and women choosing to vote for Romney. They aren't necessarily the same thing.

I get so, SO annoyed when people say that they aren't voting for Romney because he hates women and hates birth control and wants to ban abortions. Honestly, people. Read/watch the news and preferably a source that isn't heavily democratically influenced .
I like to think of the president as a face for the country, because the people who actually decide on things are congress. Obama wants to strengthen gun control, but I still have all of my guns, as does everyone else I know. No extra training required. Same with Romney, even if he doesn't believe in abortions (which he does, sortof) he alone cannot make that decision.
I am so unbelievably against Obama but I can see why people watching the debates or anything would chose him, because he is a great public speaker. Thats the only thing nice I have to say to him.

I have NEVER loved everything about any candidate I've ever voted for. There is always something I may not agree with... the point is to vote for who you most identify with, or most agree with.
Either way, I'm with PP's on I don't support a women's right to choose... what about her child's right to choose. That's what gets me every time.

I agree with several of you. THE ECONOMY is the big issue in this election for me and I want my country run by someone who agrees with me on these issues. I don't have strong pro-abortion access feelings. I am not pro-life per say as I do think women should have the right to choose an early pregnancy abortion, but if Romney wins I don't think he will be able to make abortion illegal anyway. So this is not the issue I am concerned with in this election.
And as an aside, (not that I am saying this is Romney) ANY Republican candidate has to say they are "pro-life" or else they would not be backed by their party. Otherwise, they would never make it as a viable candidate. I think all this women's rights stuff is a distraction.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I dont consider a womans right to choose to a be a "small issue" by any means. Its the most personal issue out there! I cant choose all the tiny details of the economy, or the war but at least for my own body I shoud get the final say?

I don't support Romney's stance on abortion or gay rights. However, when I see a direct hit to my paycheck that supports my family due to Obama policies I have a hard time with that. I am neither gay nor would I consider abortion, but I support the right to choose. I am not uninformed, I just have different priorities that affect my family.

@Mrsbells: I think it's a matter of personal opinion. If that's your biggest issue in the election than that's your prerogative for sure!! I'm just curious if you would vote for whoever is pro-choice, no matter their stance on other issues?
For me, things like excessive federal government spending, suffocation of the private sector due to increased business taxes, and moving away from dependence on the Middle East for oil, are all much much larger issues for me to base my vote on.
It's definitely 100% a matter of personal opinion and I respect everyone's right to prioritize their issues and vote as they see fit.
What I resent is the seemingly general consensus that as a woman I should automatically put women's rights ahead of all else.

I think a lot of people's political views do not really align with their personal views. I have a good friend who is voting for Romney today who benefits quite a lot from the Affordable Care Act (she is still on her parents' insurance), and she uses Planned Parenthood for affordable well woman care. I worry about her if more Republicans get into office, which is ironic because she is a Republican.
Also, I find it interesting that some of the same people here don't support a woman's right to choose and are voting for a candidate who feels the same, but have been very supportive of a woman on these boards who had a reduction of her pregnancy.
The personal is political, ladies.

@sslm: No thats ok. I understand. I dont put it above all else. I personally dont like Romney policies or lack of policies, especially with regards to lower income people. He has clear disdain for "poor kids" as he described them in his debate.
I also find it ironic all the criticism Obama receives about the economy, when McCain was running he didnt even want to acknowlege that there was anything wrong with the economy and said we had become a "nation of whiners" Bush messed up the economy, Mccain didnt see anything wrong with it, but now thats its actually improving its all obama's fault.
