I use bottom, my DH uses butt and I don't like it, I think it's inappropriate for a LO to say. I'm really trying to get him to say "sit down on your bottom" instead.

As for other privates, we call her private "her potty" and breast 'boobies" she's only 1 so maybe I will mature up, but I really can't imagine a toddler using the proper terms! ha I'll stick with innocent nicknames for now.

Right now LO uses "boobies" for breasts and "booty" for butt. We actually use booty in our household, haha. We will eventually teach her the proper terminology. I realized that we need to stop all the cutesy things we do because she says/does them to us, like running after me and grabbing my butt and saying "booty booty booty."

DH and I actually just had a convo about vulva vs. vagina. I said we will teach her the difference but I think that people will generally find it more acceptable for her to use vagina rather than vulva. I'm imagining a 2-year-old walking around talking about her vulva and how that might seem shocking to some people.

@mrs. wagon: I don't think they're breasts until a girl is going through puberty, so it is chest until then haha.

I use anatomically correct names. Although, I guess in that respect I would have to use gluteus maximus

I had to think about it, but I use bottom with my son. I don't call the chest by the pectoral muscles, so it seems to formal to call it gluteus maximus, lol.

Will have to discuss this with the hubby tonight so that we'll be on the same page with terminology later on, but we call DS's penis "pee pee".

DD says butt and vagina so far. I think she says boobs ... haven't taught her breasts ...or penis yet! She's seen lots of little boys at school, but she's never commented on their parts, at least not to me.

Bottom when my oldest was little and I was referring to it, later he called it butt, and I didn't correct him.

Penis was "peanut" or privates. In retrospect, I'm glad that he didn't use penis because he was very expressive once he learned that boy and girls were different from each other. Most notably, one trip to Target where he sat in the cart and would say, "peanut" or "no peanut" whenever we passed someone.

Once he moved past that stage, we used the anatomically correct terms for genitalia.

We say bottom, penis, scrotum, breast, vagina, or genitals.

@shinymama: My daughter said "peanut" for a while too! I thought it was so cute.

We do bottom/bum/butt. We're not picky But as for the others, we use proper terms.

@anbanan15: I also read that predators are unlikely to use the correct terms for private parts, so it helps kids be more aware of possible "tricky people".

I think we plan on using the real words: butt, penis, vagina ... My friend has a 3 year old who is very interested in boobs right now. When I talk to her, I find myself saying "boobies", but it's probably because it sounds more appropriate than 'boobs'.

And yes, @anbanan15, I was just getting ready to say that part too!! Even though the parent might know what the kid is saying when they say, "So & so touched my woo-woo", another trusted adult might not know what it means!!

We'll teach the correct terms. I get that some people think the little nicknames are cute, but to be honest, I just don't really see the point. Although some parts are private (which they will be taught!) I don't really believe in making up names for them like the real words are too embarrassing or something - I don't want my kids to feel like that about any part of their body. I mean, I wouldn't call his arm anything different than his arm, you know what I mean?

I was babysitting for my 2 year old nephew about a year ago and he came out of his room crying and telling me that his 'ting ting' hurt. I had ZERO clue what he was talking about. It turned out that a string from his underwear had come loose and was wrapped around his penis, but it sure would've been faster/easier to deal with if I had known what the heck he was saying! And +1 on what PPs have said about sexual predators as well. For butt I say bottom to my LO, In time she will learn all the real words but I for now I will just teach her to say "private parts"

We use "bum", and he knows/we use the real words for everything else (penis, foreskin, scrotum, breasts, nipples, vulva, vagina).

I know DH will want to use nicknames, but I think we should teach the proper names maybe around 2 years old?
Before that I'd probably say bum bum/booty/butt-butt.
I'm trying to figure out a discreet nickname for breasts since I don't want her shouting out boobies or breasts when she wants to nurse! And need something for vagina. "v" maybe?

Since I work with other people's children I find I have to toe the line carefully sometimes since different families deal with this differently. My general tactic after I run it by the parents is to tell them the correct name and then say that some people don't like hearing the names of private parts out in public so we use bottom and chest when we are talking near other people. It seems to work well since then they have the ability to describe a bigger problem and know that some conversations are best not had in line at the grocery store!

I plan on using proper arabic words for them. That way, no one knows what were saying anyways. In arabic, there aren't "child words" for private parts.
