E is nearly 15 months and although she understands quite a bit, she doesn't seem to be repeating words yet. I think 15 months is still quite early! With my oldest, we just continued to read and repeat words all day it seemed. By 20 months he really started talking and repeating almost everything.

My daughter is 16 months, and also doesn't use a lot of words yet. Her receptive language is fabulous, but she doesn't usually seem to feel the need to use her words to explain herself. I read a book about language development and one thing they said was to not talk all the time... let your child talk, and when they say a word or just talk nonsensically, give them positive feedback. A touch or a kiss lets them know that they are doing something good, and the positive reinforcement is supposed to encourage them to talk more. I've been trying some of this. Who knows if it's actually working, but she has started to use a few more words recently.

For us, 18-19 months is when his talking is starting to take off. I can ask him questions and get small verbal responses (1-2 words). He has started imitating words we say and is getting much better recall (give him an animal toy and he can say what it is and the sound it makes). It has come on very suddenly. He has also started having long drawn out babbling nonsensical conversations with us lately- these are so much fun! So for us at least, 15 months would have been way, way early!

Sounds totally normal to me. DS had a small handful of words at 15 months but didn't really start talking a lot until 18 months, that was his word explosion. I think if they are understanding everything they are probably fine.
