I've posted about pianos before, but i have an opportunity to get a free piano from a friend who is moving. The only cost would be a moving charge of $250-350. Our house is pretty small so we would have to get rid of a console table.
Should i do it? Would you??

We did! My ILs were looking to get rid of a piano that had been in the family for years. Even though half of the keys are down and it's completely out of tune, we took it. We eventually have to get it fixed and tuned, but I just love having a piano in the house even though neither of us play. LO loves to bang on it!

YYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! Assume you will also need to pay to get it tuned after the move, but still yes, for sure.

There was a really depressing article last year about how easy it is to get free pianos! You can even get people to pay the moving costs for you sometimes!!
I wouldn't take a piano unless you plan to play or take lessons... you can always get a free one later!

@mrbee: DH said we weren't getting the piano unless i was going to play because our house is very small. I had originally planned on taking my childhood piano with me when i left home, but the cost to ship it across the country is too high. That's a cool website, but too bad there are none in my city.

haha I've been waffling with this question for a few years. My parents have a piano in their house that was mine that they'd like to get rid of and keep offering to me. But we'd have to rent a truck to move it and hire movers to get it into our house because there are stairs. Plus get it tuned. I've never felt strongly enough to pull the trigger due to the cost, but I keep thinking I ought to at some point.

It would have to be a decent piano for me to bother. I took 10 years of lessons and hate playing on crappy out of tune pianos.

@Freckles: Yes, but only if you and others are going to actually play it! 
I played piano for 15 years and I intend on having my kids learn. But keep in mind that when you receive it, it will most likely need a tuning (even if it was in tune before the move) and that will be a regular expense to keep up.
ETA: I'd only accept it if it were a piano I'd want to buy.. I only know of a few brands that my parents shopped for when we bought our piano when I was young. So I'd need to brush up on my research!

Yes, but I agree with @ElbieKay: that it'd better be a decent piano or I won't bother for the moving and tuning costs.
Do you play? What is the brand for the piano you are getting? And how old is the piano? Just curious.. Another consideration is are you planning to stay at your house for a pretty long time?
I did soooo much research when I was buying mine but that was a few years back.. Why didn't anyone offer to give me a free piano???
ETA: I didn't play as much as I should, but my piano has an autoplay system installed in it. I know that they can install that on really old pianos too but of course it would cost you. Something to think about if you don't play a lot and still want some live music from it.

@irene: We'll probably be in our house for another few years. I didn't ask for the name because honestly, when i was looking at used pianos on craigslist i was looking for the cheapest piano. The cheapest ones i saw were about $500. I had a very expensive Yamaha growing up, and at this point i'll be happy with a nice piano that was loved by its previous owner. Autoplay system is pretty cool, but it may freak me out if it accidentally went off. haha

@ElbieKay: I played as a kid and hated that my parents never got the piano tuned. They thought it didn't matter but I could hear it.

No way-- our house is way too small for one! Plus with the moving charge, I wouldn't consider it to be "free" at all.

I would (and did!). We moved it ourselves - just rented a flat truck bed thing to hitch to the back of the suv. Cost something like $30. Now we have our good piano, and the free one (which we used in our engagement pics and as our wedding altar)
