I'd do whatever my OB recommended.

I should have voted "not my choice--" I don't think you can even try where I live now. Something must have happened in the last five years b/c you used to be able to try.

My baby was breech at almost 37 weeks, and my OB said if I'd like, she'd transfer me to an OB who handles vaginal breech deliveries. I wasn't comfortable with the idea, so I went to the chiropractor for the Webster technique. It was successful. Otherwise, I would have had a c-section.

My niece was delivered vaginally frank breech. My SIL just happened to have the best OB in the area for breech vaginal births at the hospital, because they didn't know the baby was breech, so it was a lucky chance they got to deliver. They had to make an episiotomy, to make it easier for baby to get through.

If a baby were any other form of breech, though, I wouldn't risk it, and it's not really safe.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it, anyways...what matters most to me is getting my baby out, alive and healthy, so I'd go for a c-section just to avoid the risks. At that point the risks for vaginal are more than the c-section.

@MsMini: seriously! Breech resuscitations always scare the crap out of me!

Not for a first child, but I would consider it in a hospital for a subsequent child because I believe the risk and anxiety factor are both lower. I wasn't in the situation but those are my doctor's general guidelines.

My OB actually does not do ECVs but she will deliver a breech baby, which I think is the opposite of most! Her philosophy is that generally babies are breech for a reason (short cord or whatever) so she doesn't try to flip em.

@mamimami: I had a successful ECV at 38 weeks but my midwife has delivered a handful of breech babies.

no, my mil is a l&d nurse and i've heard too many horror stories from her.

I would trust my OBGYN's opinion. My baby's health and safety are more important to me than delivering vaginally.

it depends on what my midwife thought. if she thought it was safe for me to try and felt confident in herself (i know she's attended breech vaginal births before) then yes i would! only in a hospital though.

Probably only in a hospital and most definitely only with a care provider experienced in breech delivery. But yes, I would definitely want the option. It's scary how these skills are not being taught anymore.

@Vegmama: My daughter was still breech at 32 weeks, which isn't really late, but I wanted her head down for peace of mind. I saw a chiropractor twice and on the way home from the second appointment at 34 weeks, she began the huge movements that continued for 24 hours and culminated in her being head down at the next check 48 hours later. And there was no mistaking that's what it was, I'd never felt so much movement from here, neither before or after that event.

No, not at all. My youngest was breech from about 32 weeks on, and I didn't for one second consider a breech delivery. I don't think I would be able to handle the guilt if he was needlessly harmed because I insisted on it.

{We had my c-section scheduled for 39 weeks, and when I went in for my pre-op appointment, he was head down!}

@Vegmama: Often these kinds of things depend on state regulatory laws on home birth midwives. It's not that they wouldn't be willing or experienced, but they simply can't do it and stay legal. VBACs, breech, multiples, GD, different states have different rules about who can have a home birth with a certified midwife.

Heck no!!! I in no way, shape, or form ever want a c-section, but my desire to have a live baby, safe and healthy, far outweighs that. Way too risky to try for a breech vaginal birth in my opinion and in the end, all that matters is a healthy baby and healthy mama.

I have seen a few videos of breech births, i think i wouldnt be able to do, as i would be too scared...i might think different if i already had given birth to one baby...atleast i would know what i would be going into...

I had a breech baby and vaginal delivery wasn't offered, but would have opted for a c section regardless. I also had GD, so size was a concern (she ended up being 5 lbs at 38 weeks, but she was projected to be in the 8 lbs).

My midwife is the expert in our area for vaginal breech birth. I would still try a vaginal birth if my baby was breech and likely still a home birth. My grandmother delivered my father breech actually. I think it is considered super risky now days because obs and midwives aren't trained on the delivery process in the way they once were. C section has become the norm, but breech is a relatively normal presentation and can be delivered naturally if you have a skilled birth attendant, imo.

I would not be comfortable with it. But my boss did it with her 2nd. Apparently one hospital in the area does them.
