Hi! My son’s birthday falls on a Saturday this year - 12/28. We are hoping to have his party that Saturday and invite ~15 kids. I’m about to book it but am now getting worried that it’ll be too close to Christmas and no one will come. We could push it out a few weeks, but I was hoping to use my time off around Christmas to prep. I’m fine with it if half or so of the kids can’t make it (we pay an extra amount for every guest beyond 10, so a small group is okay) but would be incredibly bummed if only one or two kids came. He’s turning 4 and this is his first “friends” party so we are newbies! What do you guys think? Also, how far in advance should we send out invites?

I'll be honest, I would only go if it were a best friend. I'm always so overwhelmed the week after Xmas and usually one of us has the freaking stomach bug that week. Every year. My sons are both mid Jan and I worry about parties even then.

I would send the invite out by this week so it gives a heads up and ppl can plan accordingly since it’s near a holiday.
However, if you don’t feel comfortable push it out but i would say it’s okay.

I have a December LO too, though she is earlier in the month, so I understand the worry. This year all of our holiday related things are before Christmas so we would come! I do think you have to be prepared that lots of people travel on/around the holidays so they simply may not be in town.
If you are doing the 28th I would get invitations out this week.

So, I never ever had a friends birthday party on my birthday.
This year I’m turning 40 and I’m still not having it on my bday because so many people travel to see family or do fun things the weekend between Xmas and New Year.
It could be small and perfect! Just be prepared for no one to come.I’d call your guests soon, gauge their interest, tell them to save the date, and remind them at least twice between today and the party.
Reminders are key because people literally lose track of the days between Xmas and New Year! -
We nearly always either travel or have family in town if we don't so we would likely have to decline. Completely depends on your friends group though. I'd call as many as you can and see if they will be in town

We always have one or two parties to attend over Christmas break, and they always seem well attended! Some people travel, but a lot of people stay in town.

I would if we were home but we never are! I always see parties as a nice distraction especially when kids may be off school.

I might go but honestly I would be bummed to interrupt our holiday break unless it is for a very close friend. We are always so crazy busy with two full time jobs and three kids. I feel constantly overwhelmed and overscheduled, and I really look forward to some unscheduled time over the holidays. But I have 16mo twins and my company is going through a merger plus we just moved so I am definitely at peak overwhelmed right now!

Can you call up a couple of his besties’ parents and feel it out?
My younger one has a mid December bday and I surveyed a couple of the moms I’m friends with to see if they would be around on 1/4 or if i should push it back. But doing it on her actual bday wasn’t an option since it’s mid week anyway.To answer- maybe we would come. A good friend, yes, this uear, since we aren’t traveling. Last year we had justgotten home the day before and the kids were out of sorts. A school classmate she isn’t really friends with, probably not.

Actually, if this was my real life, we won't be able to go since we're just coming back from vacation. But it's probably hard to tell who goes away and who doesn't. We've never gone away until my oldest entered public school system and is off for prolonged periods of time!
I would totally either email or if you are in a FB group, poll to see if people are free!

We got invited to a party on 12/29, and we are going, so yes! I know that parent put some feelers out before picking the date to ensure that at least a few of the birthday girl's friends would be around because otherwise, they would have pushed it back a weekend.

I probably wouldn't go, because we go away for Christmas week. On the other hand, if we were back, it would be a nice thing for the kids to look forward to to help offset the post-Christmas letdown.

I would go. I'm out of ideas and/or too tired to entertain my kids at that point in the break so I'd welcome a party invite.

Yes, the kids would like to see their friends around that time since they are on break from school! Even if that weren't the case, if we were free, we'd go. And we don't have holiday stuff on the 28th. I have one child with a holiday birthday and we do plan on doing parties either a couple weeks before or after though. BUT that has more to do with us not wanting to plan anything around that time.

That’s a toughie. If it were me this year then yes we’d go. We aren’t going away and don’t have company coming. I would just expect only a few kids to come.
You should get the invites out this week if that is when you are having it.

That’s my son’s birthday! He’s turning 5 this year. We have had two birthday parties with friends close to his real bday and they got pretty decent turnout despite being so close to Christmas and me having the same worries. Some people are out of town but some of the people who stay around or just got back from traveling are excited For something to do to entertain their kiddos. That being said, this year we are going to try out a party in January because I am hosting my sisters baby shower in December and there is just too much going on!
